Position Title: Server/Bartender

Employment Type: Part-Time/Full-Time
Hours of Work: Minimum of 5 hours per week and a maximum of 34 hours per week. These positions have a seasonal layoff in the summer, from May to August. These are unionized positions with the right to recall after the seasonal layoff.
Overview: The Students’ Union Pub is seeking friendly, motivated individuals to join our casual, fast-paced environment. Experience is preferred, and student applications from VIU will take priority over non-students. Positions available include serving, bartending, bussing, and doorperson. Serving and bartending roles involve regular engagement with guests, making drinks, taking food and drink orders, running food and drinks to tables, punching in Doordash and takeout orders, and often working special events. Bussers run food and drinks as well as clear tables. The doorperson strictly works the door during events, checks IDs, assists the Pub Organizer with crowd control, and identifies issues. FOH positions work as a team and communicate well with the BOH and Pub Organizer.
Position Overview: The Server/Bartender at the Vancouver Island University Students Union Pub is responsible for providing exceptional customer service, preparing and serving beverages, and maintaining a clean and organized bar and dining area. This role requires a friendly and professional demeanor, efficient multitasking, and a commitment to creating a welcoming atmosphere for our patrons.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greet and seat guests promptly, providing menus and taking orders accurately.
- Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages according to standardized recipes.
- Ensure all orders are prepared and delivered promptly.
- Maintain a clean and organized bar and dining area, including clearing and cleaning tables.
- Check identification to verify legal drinking age and comply with all alcohol service regulations.
- Manage cash and credit transactions accurately using the POS system.
- Monitor guest satisfaction and promptly address any concerns or issues.
- Restock bar inventory and supplies as needed.
- Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food and beverage handling and sanitation practices.
- Collaborate with kitchen staff and other team members to ensure smooth operations.
- Participate in opening and closing duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a server or bartender in a restaurant or pub setting is preferred.
- Valid Serving It Right certification.
- Strong knowledge of drink recipes, mixing techniques, and beverage service standards.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.
