About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate overnight caregiver for a mother receiving palliative care in her home in Bells Corners, Ottawa. She has approximately two months remaining and requires 24/7 supervision. She uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility and needs assistance with transfers and toileting throughout the night. While a family member will be present in the home for comfort and support, they are currently unable to provide physical assistance due to a back injury. This is a meaningful opportunity to provide dignified, compassionate care during a sensitive time.
Responsibilities:
- Provide overnight supervision and safety monitoring
- Assist with mobility using walker or wheelchair
- Support with toileting and personal hygiene needs (typically 1-2 times per night)
- Help with transfers from bed to bathroom and back
- Respond calmly to any nighttime needs or concerns
- Coordinate with family member present in the home
- Maintain client's comfort and dignity throughout the night
What We're Looking For:
We need a caregiver who makes the client feel comfortable and brings a calm, patient presence to the home. Reliability and consistency are essential, as is clear communication with the family. The ideal caregiver has experience with palliative care, mobility assistance with walkers or wheelchairs, and personal care including toileting support. You should be comfortable working independently overnight while respecting the family member's presence and involvement. We're looking for someone who takes initiative when needed, respects the client's independence, and understands the specialized nature of end-of-life care.
Schedule:
Overnight shifts on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday nights from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM (11 hours per shift, 33 hours per week). Start date is as soon as possible, ideally within the next week. This is a three-month commitment with flexibility given the palliative nature of care.
Additional Details:
The client is English-speaking. The family has previous experience with palliative care and values open communication. Ontario Health at Home palliative care team is also involved. This position offers the opportunity to make a profound difference during a family's most challenging time.
