POSITION SUMMARY:
Grace Place Out of the Cold emergency overnight shelter - October 1st 2026 - April 30th 2027 - Night Shift 8:30pm - 8:30am
Under the direction of the Out of the Cold Shelter Manager, Shift Supervisor will provide assistance and support to those experiencing homelessness while using a harm reduction approach in building and maintaining relationships. Provide a safe environment and a warm place to sleep; meal prep and light snacks; and in conjunction with the program navigators assist clients in connecting to community support services for housing, mental health and addiction services.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Using a trauma-based approach, ensure safety of all staff and individuals accessing the Grace Place Out of the Cold program as per Policies and Procedures.
2. Ability to work as a team.
3. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of local community support agencies, government departments, institutions/organizations and other groups relevant to the client in order to suit their needs.
4. Prepare and provide hot meals and snacks, and perform general maintenance duties such as cleaning and laundry.
5. Communicate effectively between all staff and clients.
6. Ability to deescalate, potentially escalating situations.
7. Provide personal care to clients as needed.
8. Take part in professional development.
9. Ability to follow Infection Prevention and Control measures. (IPAC)
10. Perform intake of clients to the Grace Place/Out of the Cold Shelter.
11. Candidate must be able to meet specific physical demands in order to fulfill Support Worker duties.
12. Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time.
13. Ability to lead by example and oversee Support Workers.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of a degree, diploma, or certificate in Social Work, Addictions Counseling, Personal Support Worker, Aboriginal Canadian Relations, Aboriginal Community Advocacy, and Public Health or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Life experience also an asset.
Prefer individuals who have experience working with individuals currently, or formerly, experiencing homelessness, mental health and substance abuse issues.
- Strong communication skills specifically in conflict resolution or non-violent crisis intervention.
- Experience of harm reduction, community service agencies, and the homeless population are assets.
- Ability to use sound judgement, perform job duties with minimal supervision and problem solve.
- Must possess a strong work ethic and the ability to work within a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to multi-task.
- First Aid is an asset
