About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 60-year-old gentleman living independently in Arthur, Ontario. He has COPD and recently qualified for oxygen therapy, which he now relies on increasingly throughout the day. While he uses oxygen on-demand rather than continuously, his lung capacity is declining and he experiences significant breathing difficulties. He has been in and out of the hospital recently due to respiratory issues and struggles with basic mobility, particularly navigating the stairs in his apartment building. He is a mild-mannered, easygoing person who is a functional alcoholic, though he maintains a pleasant and cooperative demeanor. This is his first time receiving professional care support.
Responsibilities:
The caregiver will provide comprehensive support to help him maintain independence and safety at home. Key duties include assisting with personal care tasks such as bathing and hygiene, supporting mobility and transfers throughout his apartment, preparing nutritious meals, providing medication reminders, and performing light housekeeping including cleaning and laundry. Transportation assistance is essential as he is no longer driving—this includes accompanying him to medical appointments and running errands such as grocery shopping. The caregiver should be comfortable working with oxygen equipment and familiar with COPD care protocols. Companionship is also important as he lives alone and would benefit from social engagement.
What We're Looking For:
We need an experienced PSW who is calm, patient, and brings positive energy to their work. The ideal caregiver will have specific experience with COPD care and oxygen equipment, strong skills in mobility assistance and transfers, and comfort providing personal care support. They must be reliable, take initiative when needed, communicate clearly with family members, and respect his independence while ensuring his safety. A valid driver's license is required for transportation needs. The caregiver should be non-judgmental and understanding regarding his alcohol use while maintaining professional boundaries. English-speaking candidates only.
Schedule:
We are looking for consistent daily support, ideally 2-3 hour visits twice per week to start, with flexibility to add additional days as needs evolve. Visits should accommodate grocery deliveries, meal preparation time, and appointment schedules. Reliability and consistency are essential.
