This position is responsible for leading mechanical engineering, high-performance tooling development, and fabrication-related projects from initiation through closeout. The role is a hybrid between engineering design and project leadership, requiring hands-on involvement in tooling development alongside full lifecycle project management.
The successful candidate will contribute directly to the design and optimization of custom tooling operating in demanding environments, including heavy wear, high load, and field-intensive applications, while coordinating internal and external fabrication execution.
The opportunity
· Lead projects from kickoff through engineering, tooling design, fabrication, construction support, commissioning, and closeout.
· Design and develop custom tooling, fixtures, and mechanical devices for heavy-duty and wear-intensive applications, including prototyping, testing, and iterative refinement.
· Apply advanced design-for-manufacturability (DFM) principles including GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and material selection for durability and performance.
· Work directly with manufacturing machining teams to optimize manufacturability, machining efficiency, production cost, and throughput.
· Support heavy machining and precision CNC operations by aligning engineering design with fabrication capabilities (multi-axis machining, tight tolerances, complex geometries).
· Evaluate design decisions with awareness of fabrication cost, material selection, and long-term product performance.
· Perform or support failure analysis (wear, fatigue, fracture) and implement continuous improvement through redesign and standardization.
· Coordinate fabrication scopes including shop drawings, welding procedures, inspection and test plans, and quality documentation.
· Manage communication between engineering, fabrication shops, vendors, and clients.
· Monitor project performance across scope, schedule, cost, safety, and quality.
· Travel periodically to project sites, fabrication shops, vendor locations, and client offices in Canada and the United States, as required.
Your background
· Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree, from an accredited university.
· P.Eng with Alberta, and or Professional Engineer in the USA with ability to obtain Texas PE.
· Minimum 10 years experience in the design, manufacture, testing, or operation of downhole tools, completion equipment, drilling tools, production equipment, or related oilfield technologies.
· Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, machine design, stress analysis, fatigue analysis, and pressure-containing components.
· Direct experience working in or alongside machine shops and fabrication environments.
· Experience with steel and alloy material selection for durability, wear resistance, and fatigue performance.
· Ability to bridge engineering design and project management, balancing technical decisions with execution requirements.
· Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (CSA, ASME, API) where applicable.
· Demonstrated project management capability across scope, schedule, cost, and stakeholders.
· Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, coordinate internal and external resources, and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
· Excellent interpersonal, communication, planning, problem-solving, negotiation, and organizational skills.
· Detail-oriented, accountable, adaptable, and committed to safety, quality, client service, and continuous improvement.
· Willingness and ability to travel between offices, fabrication facilities, vendor shops, and project sites as required.
Other Assets (Skills and Training)
· Advanced SolidWorks experience including part modelling, assemblies, weldments, design tables, and manufacturing drawings.
· Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) tools such as SolidWorks Simulation, Abaqus, or similar software.
· Knowledge of CNC machining practices including turning, milling, threading, tolerancing, surface finishes, and tooling considerations.
· Experience working within ISO 9001 or API Q1 quality management systems.
· Experience supporting API, NACE, ASME, CSA, or client-specific technical requirements.
· PMP designation or project management training is considered an asset.
· Experience with product qualification testing, design validation, and failure analysis.
· Technical writing skills for operating manuals, manufacturing procedures, test protocols, and engineering reports.
Benefits
· Industry competitive, extended health and benefits plan.
· RRSP with company match
