Duties/Accountabilities:
- Layout and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and brace them in position within the hull of a vessel for welding; layout positions of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools.
- Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
- Align parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
- Mark location of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding or riveting.
- Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
- Prepare templates for the fabrication of nonstandard parts.
- Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
- Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, and bending brakes.
What do you need to succeed?
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Competent in the use of various hand and power tools
- Familiarization with manufacturing and assembly of materials, preference given to those with previous marine experience
- Ability to read a measuring tape
- Ability to read blueprints and understand work orders
- Great attention to detail is required in order to achieve quality standards
- Previous experience in a similar role preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Regular periods during which there is continuous physical effort is required, e.g., walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward
- Exposure to factors such as temperature variations, fumes, moving machinery, humidity, high noise levels
- Frequent need to give concentrated attention, either hearing or seeing to work being performed
- Noticeable pressure from deadlines, production quotas, accuracy or similar demands exists.
