The General Labourer I is an entry-level field position responsible for performing basic manual labour and site-support activities on infrastructure construction projects involving sewer, watermain, storm drainage, roadwork, and utility installations. This role supports the field crew by assisting with simple tasks, maintaining clean work areas, and following direction from supervisors.
The General Labourer I plays an important role in maintaining safe, organized, and productive work environments on Sierra job sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform simple labour tasks such as shoveling, sweeping, raking, and moving materials.
- Assist with trench cleanup, site preparation, and general ground support activities.
- Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment as directed.
- Support crew members by providing basic assistance in daily tasks.
- Follow OHSA, Book 7, use required PPE and compliance with HSE policies and procedures.
- Remain aware of hazards involving excavation, utilities, equipment, and traffic.
- Report unsafe conditions or concerns immediately to the Foreperson or Superintendent.
- Participate in safety briefings, site orientations, and toolbox talks.
- Safely use basic hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, and utility tools.
- Assist with simple operation of labour-level tools (e.g., wheelbarrows, hoses, small pumps) when trained.
- Keep tools clean, maintained, and properly stored at the end of each shift.
- Maintain clean, organized work areas by removing debris, excess materials, and waste.
- Help set up basic safety barriers, signage, and traffic control devices when instructed.
- Support general jobsite housekeeping to ensure safe access and work zones.
- Assist with staging materials and preparing work areas for crews.
- Provide simple support to equipment operators by maintaining a safe distance and following instructions.
- Support pipe crews, road crews, or general civil construction activities with basic tasks.
- Follow instructions accurately and ask for clarification when needed.
- Communicate courteously with Forepersons, crew members, and field leadership.
- Maintain a positive, cooperative, and respectful attitude on site.
- Work effectively within a team to support safe, efficient operations.
- Assist other field crews or work areas when directed.
- Perform general construction and labour tasks as assigned by the Foreperson or Superintendent.
- Carry out any other duties required to support field operations.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned, whether specifically or generally related to the role
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Prior construction experience is an asset but not required — training is provided.
- Ability to use basic hand tools safely and effectively.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn field construction tasks.
- Basic understanding of construction safety practices.
- Physically capable of lifting, bending, kneeling, and performing manual labour in varying conditions.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred.
- Safety certifications such as WHMIS, Book 7, or First Aid are assets.
