About the Role
We're a growing online retro video game store and consumer electronics business specializing in sourcing, restoring, and reselling classic gaming hardware. We're hiring a senior Electronics Repair Technician II / Specialist to take on board-level diagnostics, microsoldering, mods, and high-value restorations — the work that meaningfully increases the resale value of our inventory and tackles the repairs others can't.
This is an experienced role. You'll own complex repairs end to end, help set our quality standards, and mentor newer technicians, with possible profit sharing (on a case-by-case basis), hybrid flexibility, and expo attendance among the perks.
We're looking for someone with a high-energy yet calm, level-headed personality — the kind of person who brings real enthusiasm to the bench but stays composed and methodical when a repair gets tricky.
The hardware you'll work on includes:
- Video game consoles — Nintendo, Sony, and others (Sega, Microsoft, Atari, etc.)
- Handhelds — Game Boy line, DS/3DS, PSP/PS Vita, Switch, and modern retro handhelds
- Games & cartridges — cleaning, save-battery replacement, contact restoration
- Other electronics — CRT televisions and monitors, phones, laptops, and digital/film cameras
Responsibilities
You'll handle the full range of repair work — from the foundational refurbishment, cartridge, controller, and screen repairs that keep inventory moving, through to the advanced work below:
- Perform board-level / microsoldering repairs: surface-mount (SMD) rework, trace and pad repair, and component-level diagnosis.
- Recap consoles and handhelds (e.g., SMD capacitor replacement on Game Boys, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and similar).
- Install and troubleshoot mods — IPS/backlight kits, region-free and HDMI/digital video mods, RGB mods, FPGA-based solutions, and similar value-adding modifications.
- Safely service CRT televisions and monitors, including capacitor replacement and calibration. (Requires high-voltage safety knowledge — CRTs store lethal charge; proper discharge and handling procedures are mandatory.)
- Diagnose and repair phones and laptops at the board and component level (charging circuits, power rails, connectors, etc.).
- Repair digital and film cameras — light seals, shutter mechanisms, sensor/CCD issues, and electronic faults.
- Lead complex diagnostics using schematics, boardview files, and circuit diagrams.
- Identify which repairs and restorations are worth pursuing based on cost, time, and resale value.
- Mentor and review the work of Technician I staff; help develop repair SOPs and quality standards.
- Test every repaired device for full functionality and maintain accurate repair and parts records.
- Represent the business at expo and convention events (sourcing, repairs-on-site, networking).
Qualifications
- Proven experience with board-level repair and microsoldering.
- Strong command of schematics, boardview files, and circuit diagrams.
- Experience modding and restoring retro consoles and handhelds.
- High-voltage safety knowledge for CRT work (or willingness to be trained and certified before handling CRTs).
- Broad platform familiarity across Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Microsoft, and ideally cameras/phones/laptops.
- Self-directed, with sound judgment on repair-vs.-scrap and value decisions.
- A focused high-energy yet calm, composed approach to the work.
- Comfortable mentoring and documenting processes for others.
Nice to Have (Not Mandatory)
None of these are required, but they're a plus and help your application stand out:
- Previous technician or repair work experience at a company.
- Access to a car (useful for sourcing runs and events).
- Genuine passion for retro gaming and/or electronics repair.
- Previous experience working at a video game store.
Pay & Perks
- Higher base pay, [30-45/hr], commensurate with experience and skill set.
- Profit sharing on eligible products — for higher-value restorations, mods, and specialty repairs, you earn a share of the margin uplift your work creates. (Specific products and percentages defined per category.)
- Hybrid / work-from-home flexibility available after an initial period with us, for repair work and tasks suited to a home bench setup.
- Expo and convention attendance — travel, entry, and accommodation typically covered.
- Employee discount on our inventory.
- Option to be paid in store credit — take part of your compensation as store credit toward games, consoles, and gear at a preferred rate, if you'd like.
- Tools and equipment are provided — you're welcome to bring and use your own if you prefer.
- Regular short breaks between repairs are encouraged and paid — they help maintain focus and consistent, high-quality work.
- Input into tooling, parts sourcing, and how the repair side of the business grows.
Accountability & Budgets
Each repair is assigned a parts and materials budget. Profit sharing is calculated on the net margin a completed repair generates, so the cost of any errors, rework, or damaged parts is deducted from that margin before the profit share is determined — avoidable overruns may reduce or eliminate the profit share earned on the affected item.
Where overruns are significant, or where avoidable mistakes happen repeatedly, it becomes a performance issue: the technician will be coached, and continued or serious budget overruns may result in removal from the role. We'd much rather help you work cleanly within budget than part ways, so we treat this as a clear, fair expectation set up front.
Compensation and profit-sharing terms are finalized based on experience and the specific product categories you work on. We're happy to discuss the details during the interview.
