Outdoor Education Coordinator (Full-Time)

Position Overview

Tsay Keh Dene School is seeking a full-time Outdoor Education Coordinator to lead and integrate land-
based and experiential learning across all grade levels.

This position plays a central role in embedding Outdoor Education (OE) within the school’s academic
framework while honoring Tsay Keh Dene culture, land, and community priorities. The Coordinator
will work closely with classroom teachers, the Language and Culture department, Elders, and
community knowledge holders to ensure that outdoor programming reflects both curricular standards
and the lived realities of students in a remote First Nations context.

The role requires experience working with First Nations communities, comfort in remote settings, and a
trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach to education.

This is a full-time, year-round position based in Tsay Keh Dene Nation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Land-Based & Curriculum-Integrated Programming 

Design and coordinate a vertically aligned Outdoor Education program across grade levels. 
Align OE programming with BC curriculum standards. 
Integrate land-based learning and forest school principles into subject areas. 
Collaborate closely with the Language and Culture Liaison to embed Sekani language, cultural

teachings, seasonal practices, and community knowledge into programming. 
Support teachers in developing outdoor-based assessment and reflective practices. 
Facilitate student leadership opportunities within outdoor programming.

2. Community & Cultural Collaboration 

Liaise regularly with the Language and Culture Liaison to ensure programming aligns with
Nation priorities. 

Work respectfully with Elders and community knowledge holders to incorporate cultural
teachings into trips and land-based activities. 

Support the integration of traditional ecological knowledge alongside Western environmental
science. 

Ensure outdoor programming reflects local land stewardship practices and community values.

3. Trip Planning & Expedition Leadership 

Plan and coordinate day trips, overnight experiences, and wilderness expeditions appropriate to
student readiness and community context. 

Conduct risk assessments and develop safety and emergency response plans suitable for remote
settings. 

Lead or co-lead trips, ensuring safe and inclusive participation. 
Maintain strong communication with families and administration regarding outdoor

programming.

4. Equipment & Systems Management 

Oversee outdoor equipment storage, inventory, and maintenance systems. 
Maintain clean, organized, and safety-compliant OE storage areas. 
Develop gear check-in/check-out systems. 
Manage OE budget allocations and replacement cycles.

5. Trauma-Informed & Culturally Responsive Practice 

Apply trauma-informed principles to outdoor learning environments. 
Foster psychologically safe spaces that recognize intergenerational trauma and the importance of

land as healing. 
Build strong, respectful relationships with students and families. 
Adapt programming to support diverse learner needs.

6. Safety & Risk Management



Maintain appropriate certifications (e.g., Wilderness First Aid; additional certifications
considered an asset). 

Develop and maintain OE safety policies appropriate for remote community context. 
Lead safety briefings and staff training where necessary. 
Maintain incident reporting protocols.

Qualifications

Required 

Bachelor’s degree (BA or BSc) in Outdoor Education, Environmental Studies, Physical
Education, Geography, Indigenous Studies, or related field. 

Demonstrated experience leading youth in outdoor and wilderness settings. 
Experience working with First Nations communities. 
Experience working in remote or rural environments. 
Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed educational practice. 
Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) (current certification). 
Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross (or equivalent lifeguard/water safety certification). 
Recognized Trip Leadership Certification (e.g., Paddle Canada, ORCKA, NOLS, Outward

Bound, or equivalent). 
Valid driver’s license.

Preferred 

Wilderness First Responder (WFR). 
National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certification. 
Swiftwater Rescue Technician (SRT) certification. 
Forest School Practitioner certification. 
Experience integrating Indigenous language and cultural programming into land-based

education. 
Teaching license (not required). 
Experience aligning experiential learning with BC curriculum.

Physical Requirements 

Capacity to participate in extended outdoor trips in remote environments.

Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience and aligned with Tsay Keh Dene Nation compensation
framework. Starting at $65,520. Comprehensive benefits and professional development support
