Job Overview
As Senior Manufacturing Engineer (Electronics & Hardware), you will own the complete life cycle of Cascadia’s ruggedized electronic products deployed on some of the world’s largest mining haul trucks in some of the world’s largest mining operations. You will be responsible for product reliability, manufacturing oversight, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and overseeing new hardware designs throughout the product lifecycle.
This is a highly hands-on role suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys taking products from concept through deployment and continuous improvement. You will work closely with software developers, contract manufacturers, suppliers, and field personnel to ensure our products meet the demanding reliability requirements of remote mining operations where our products are deployed.
The successful candidate will have strong experience in CAN/J1939-based vehicle electronics, manufacturing support, and troubleshooting complex field issues. Experience developing products for harsh operating environments subject to vibration, temperature extremes, electrical noise, and mechanical shock is highly desirable.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Production Planning & Management
- Manufacturing Oversight: Coordinate production schedules with contract manufacturers and internal stakeholders to meet customer delivery timelines.
- Technical Sourcing: Lead procurement activities, supplier selection, component sourcing, and vendor qualification processes.
- Fulfillment Logistics: Coordinate testing and shipping workflows to ensure products are fulfilled accurately and on schedule.
- Supplier Liaison: Provide detailed manufacturing instructions to external fabricators and act as the primary technical point of contact to resolve supplier queries.
Quality Control
- Receiving Inspection: Manage, document, and execute incoming receiving inspections with the team to ensure electronic components and finished goods meet quality standards.
- Testing Protocol: Develop and maintain testing methodologies to validate hardware performance before deployment including oversight of the 48-hour thermal cycling testing. May also include vibration testing and electrostatic discharge protection.
- Failure Analysis: Assist the Technical Operations team with root-cause failure analysis on field-returned units to implement corrective design or supplier actions.
- Supplier Control: Work with suppliers and contract manufacturers to investigate quality issues and implement corrective actions.
- Reliability Programs: Own the product reliability program, including Environmental Stress Screening (ESS), thermal cycling, and field failure metrics.
- Documentation Control: Manage audit-ready quality records, change logs, and design history files.
Process Optimization
- Workflow Efficiency: Identify inefficiencies across engineering and production workflows and implement measurable improvements.
- Performance Metrics: Establish and monitor manufacturing KPIs for throughput, yield, lead time, and cost per unit.
- Scalability: Develop scalable processes to support Cascadia’s growth without compromising quality.
Hardware Design & Development
- Design Outsourcing: Manage external partners for the design, prototyping, and development of new electronic hardware products and sub-assemblies.
- Harness Engineering: Update and revise wiring harness and cable drawings in compliance with CAN/J1939 protocols
- DFM/DFT Implementation: Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Testability (DFT) principles to external designs to improve production consistency.
- Component Evaluation: Evaluate alternative components and technologies to mitigate obsolescence, improve reliability, and optimize costs.
- Documentation: Maintain and update engineering documentation including design specifications, drawings, and records.
Product Configuration & Field Support
- Configuration Management: Work with development team to ensure firmware/hardware configurations on deployed products are updated as needed.
- Technical Support: Support diagnostic and maintenance requests from field technicians when escalated from the Technical Operations team.
- Bench Diagnostics: Update and optimize bench test procedures to maximize failure detection and diagnostic efficiency.
Safety & Compliance
- Regulatory Ownership: Manage the end-to-end regulatory certification process (FCC, CE, etc.) and support international product homologation.
- Standards Compliance: Ensure all products and activities comply with relevant health, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in fields such as Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar technical discipline or an equivalent Engineering Technologist designation.
- Experience: 8+ years of experience manufacturing, supporting, and managing electronic hardware products in industrial, automotive, or heavy mobile equipment environments.
- Vendor Management: Proven experience working directly with external PCB fabrication, assembly, and contract manufacturing partners.
- Harness & Mechanical Drafting: Hands-on experience creating, updating, and revising mechanical drawings and complex wiring harness layouts.
- Communication Protocols: Solid working knowledge of CAN bus and SAE J1939 communication systems
- Root-Cause Analysis: Strong background in troubleshooting complex field failures and conducting technical investigations.
- Compliance Knowledge: Experience supporting CE/FCC compliance programs and preparing technical documentation required for Declarations of Conformity
- Firmware Familiarity: Basic understanding of embedded firmware sufficient to diagnose interface issues and review minor code modifications.
- Ruggedization: Experience working with products for harsh operating environments involving vibration, temperature extremes, moisture, dust, and electrical noise
Preferred Qualifications:
- Heavy Equipment Ecosystems: Experience with Caterpillar CDL, Komatsu systems, or other specialized heavy equipment communication protocols
- Industry Context: Experience with manufacturing electronics specifically for mining, construction, forestry, or off-highway machinery.
- Environmental Testing: Familiarity with environmental screening methods like HALT, ESS, thermal cycling, and mechanical vibration testing.
Pay: $100,000.00-$120,000.00 per year
