Position Overview
King Animal Hospital is a 60,000-square-foot equine and small-animal, multi-specialty referral and emergency hospital located in King City, Ontario.
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Facilities Technician to support the safe and reliable operation of our hospital. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Facilities, this position is responsible for preventive maintenance, building inspections, contractor coordination, equipment records and minor repairs.
The Facilities Technician will also participate in an after-hours emergency response rotation. Emergencies may include water infiltration, power outages, equipment failures, fire alarms and other urgent facility-related issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine facility inspections and identify, address or report maintenance and safety concerns.
- Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC and other building systems, including inspecting and replacing belts and filters.
- Complete weekly generator checks and coordinate or perform monthly generator test runs.
- Conduct routine fire extinguisher checks and assist with coordinating annual fire drills.
- Perform basic mechanical, electrical and pool preventive maintenance.
- Complete minor repairs, including basic plumbing, drywall repair and painting.
- Schedule, coordinate and oversee contractors and external service providers.
- Monitor contractor performance and confirm that work is completed safely and according to requirements.
- Coordinate purchase orders in the absence of the Senior Manager, Facilities.
- Review security footage in support of authorized workplace investigations when the Senior Manager, Facilities is unavailable.
- Maintain accurate equipment maintenance, inspection and service logs.
- Respond to after-hours emergency calls as part of a rotating schedule.
- Ensure compliance with infection-control practices, health and safety requirements and other hospital protocols.
- Maintain inventories of cleaning and janitorial supplies and submit purchase requests as needed.
- Assist with organizing and storing medical, office and facility supplies.
- Occasionally restock paper products, soap, disinfectants and other supplies throughout the hospital.
- Occasionally clean and sanitize clinical and common areas when operationally required.
- Assist with the safe disposal of waste and hazardous materials in accordance with established procedures.
- Support the veterinary and hospital teams with other facilities-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Building Environmental Systems Operator Class I (BES I) certification.
- Minimum of five years of relevant facilities maintenance experience.
- Experience coordinating contractors and preventive maintenance activities.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, generator and plumbing systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and sound judgment when prioritizing competing demands.
- Excellent organizational, communication and time-management skills.
- Knowledge of appropriate cleaning, sanitation and chemical-handling practices.
- Experience working with infection-control protocols is an asset.
- Comfortable working in a veterinary hospital and around animals.
- Ability to perform physical work involving bending, kneeling, reaching and lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Availability to participate in a rotating after-hours emergency response schedule.
- A valid driver’s licence, reliable transportation and access to a personal vehicle when required. King Animal Hospital is not accessible by public transit.
