JOB SUMMARY: The Manager of Health and Safety reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Human Resources and works collaboratively with Health and Safety Committees of Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council.
The purpose and scope of the Manager of Health and Safety is to coordinate, make recommendations and implement the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council Health & Safety Program in compliance with the established Health & Safety Policy, Guidelines, Procedures and relevant legislation for the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council workplace and employees. The Manager of Health and Safety will function in a hands-on tactical capacity and in a strategic capacity, providing service and support in all matters related to occupational health and safety. This position will promote, maintain and actively improve workplace safety through the identification, assessment and control of hazards in the workplace; the mitigate the risk of identified hazards and ultimately prevent work-related injury and illness; to respond to incident to minimize frequency and severity, prevent recurrence and communicate to all stakeholders and employee wellness committee.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-Secondary Degree or a Diploma/Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety.
- Five (5) years of current work-related experience in occupational health and safety management.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP}, Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (COHS) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC} designation is considered an asset.
- Joint Health and Safety Certification (JHSC}- Part 1 and 2.
- Ergonomic Training is considered an asset.
- Workplace Investigation Training is considered an asset.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise, evaluate performance and provide coaching, support and guidance to the Disability Management Coordinator.
- Implement, maintain and sustain health and safety programs, policies and procedures.
- Engage and empower the workforce around the importance of health and safety.
- Providing ongoing guidance, expertise and support as it related to all operational and continuous improvement matters involving health and safety.
- Enhance and champion safety strategies, while continually fostering a strong culture of employee health and safety.
- Conduct physical demand analysis.
- Conduct ergonomic assessments, when required.
- Provide support to the monthly Health and Safety Committees.
- Respond to incident and hazard investigations and ESDC- hazardous Occurrence Investigation Report and to identified contravention of the Canada Labour Code and Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA).
- Ensure work refusals are properly investigated and that any necessary corrections to the work processes are implemented and documented.
- Directs employees who are found to be working in violation of any health and safety policies; documents same and forwards to the appropriate department; manager/supervisor for review with recommendation for corrective action.
- Provide leadership and guidance in the areas of policy, process design and control, regulatory review, compliance review and reporting and loss prevention as they related to occupational safety.
- Develop and lead an annual health and safety program audit to ensure the effectiveness of occupational health and safety programs and a full review of health and safety-related needs as required by applicable legislation.
- Act as a resource to all departments by providing professional safety services and guidance with the objective of adding value and ensuring compliance.
- Inspect workplaces as required to ensure equipment, layout or materials do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or to the public.
- Investigate workplace accident/incidents/near misses, file reports with follow up to department directors as required.
- Develop, coordinates and conduct new hire safety orientation training and ongoing training for First Aid/CPR training, WHMIS and other specific training for employees with annual updates as required.
- Support the Training and Development Coordinator with the development of related safety training programs such as materials, including newsletters, collateral materials and audits.
- Provides support for the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Human Resources and the Emergency Control Group.
- Active member of the Incident Management Committee.
- Active Member of the Joint Policy and Workplace Health and Safety Committee.
- Organize and coordinates the annual events such as First Nations Health & Safety Conference and Health & Safety Week during the North American Occupational Safety and Health Week.
- Chair the Employee Wellness Committee and support and promote wellness initiatives.
- Backup for the Disability Management Coordinator, maintains and monitors files for WSIB cases by communicating with the Workplace Safety Insurance Board, employees and supervisors and follow up on injuries, functional assessments and early and safe return to work.
- Plans, develops, recommends and following approval, coordinates the implementation and administration of the revised occupational health and safety programs, policies, guidelines and procedures for Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council to ensure compliance, while optimizing the safety of the workforce
- Works with the six Nations Health and Safety Committee and ensures consistency throughout the organization.
- Prepare and communicate monthly safety topics to the organization.
- Complete Employer's annual Hazardous Occurrence Report (EAHOR).
- Reviews all accident/incidents/near misses incident reports submitted as per Health and Safety program and coordinates the necessary corrective actions and maintenance of statistics.
- On a quarterly basis, reviews the operations as to making recommendations to appropriate departments and committees regarding the promotion of safe working conditions and related training requirements.
- Develop a matrix for training requirements, maintain records of all health and safety[1]related training and assist in the development of rollout programs.
- Preparation of meeting agendas for the Policy Health & Safety Committee along with secretarial functions by recording minutes for meetings, preparation of minutes and follow up memorandums for the Committee; • Coordinate Joint Policy and Workplace Health and Safety Committee elections when necessary.
- Prepare plans and reports as required, including monthly safety reports and project status updates.
- Perform other related duties as may be required by the Director of Human Resources and/or Six Nations Council Health & Safety Committees.
- Provide regular updates to the Director of Human Resources.
- Coordinates the requirements according to the Six Nations Health & Safety policy, guidelines and procedures when a critical injury or death occurs and leads the accident investigation of such an injury.
- Develops/coordinates/conducts health and safety orientation and training for all new employees, and additional training for all Six Nations employees to ensure complete and effective understanding of potential risks and expected behaviours in relation to the Six Nations Health and Safety policy, guidelines and procedures.
- Develops and communicates monthly health and safety topics to all Six Nations employees.
- Keeps abreast of changes in the training and development field, makes suggestions to the Committee on new programs and opportunities which would potentially benefit the Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council.
- Advises Council of irregularities or problems which arise in the Manager of Health and Safety's area of responsibility/
- Works collaboratively with all Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council departments in the duty to accommodate injured workers for early and safe returns.
- Maintain a safe and healthy working environment by following Six Nations of the rand River Elected Council policies and procedures and legislation.
- Accurately set up, maintain and archive health and safety files.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
