The Opportunity:
The staff therapist functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team and is responsible for the management of all occupational therapy aspects of the patient’s care. Upon referral from a physician, the therapist is responsible for assessing and developing a program of care to help assume or reassume the skills needed for the job of living. The staff therapist will help identify barriers and enable their patients to change these barriers. The staff therapist participates in the education of patients and/or appropriate caregivers, students, other health care workers and the general public, with regard to the management of the occupational therapy aspects of patient care. The staff therapist provides services on an inpatient basis as well as supervising Occupational therapy Assistants.
Qualifications:
- Prior to being awarded a Masters in Occupational Therapy, 32 weeks of clinical experience must be completed under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist.

Must strive to continuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers

Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Must have an ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellent communication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is considered an asset.

Must have basic computer skills

Must be able to perform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.

Must have demonstrated excellent attendance/performance record

Ability to work independently and effectively communicate with other members of the health care team
Preferred
- Preferred to have 1 year experience in an acute care hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assesses patients referred for inpatient occupational therapy services.
- Develops appropriate treatment program based on the patient’s ability and limitations; setting short and long term goals. This includes referral to other services required to meet these goals.
- Implements the treatment plan through provision of appropriate occupational therapy (and delegation of appropriate supervised acts).
- Educates and informs the patient and family before, during and at the termination of treatment to help the patient understand their condition and maximize their functional return.
- Reassesses patient’s progress and goals continually to ensure appropriate progression of treatment.
- Support the development and implementation of best practice models of occupational therapy.
- Provides input to the patient’s physician and other members of the health care team through direct personal discussion, inter-disciplinary conferences, and maintenance of adequate records and regular notes on the patient’s chart. Records include assessment, evaluation of progress, and discharge summary.
- Maintain and submit statistical records of daily patient and non patient activity.
- Ensures patient safety and enforces safety in the treatment area.
- Adheres to occupational therapy college requirements.
- Supervises support personal through instructing and monitoring assistants in the provision of client care.
- Ongoing improvement of occupational therapy knowledge base through ongoing education both in-hospital and continuing education activities.
- Provide high quality occupational therapy services.
- Other duties as assigned
