Job Summary
The parts fabricator/shop helper assists the welder/fitter department by fabricating the parts that are needed to complete the finished assemblies. Part drawings are issued to the shop in advance of the assembly drawings so that the parts department can produce them just before they are needed by the welder/fitters. It is important that the parts department communicate with the shop foreman so no bottlenecks occur in the fabrication process. They also help out with various other tasks such as, paint, material staging, receiving and shipping.
Responsibilities and Duties
The person in this position must ensure that they are producing the required parts at the specified deadlines. This individual will need to communicate with the shop foreman if any delays do occur or if they think there may be a delay. Delays can be caused by a manner of different things but it is the responsibility of this individual to ensure that they do not occur because of the parts department. Some of the daily duties that will be required by this individual are:
- Monitoring inventory of standard steel profiles.
- Monitoring the progress of the welder/fitter department to ensure timely parts delivery.
- Producing parts accurately and within a reasonable amount of time.
- Pre-shift inspections of the various steel manufacturing equipment.
- Willing to work within a team of individuals to stream line parts fabrication.
- Loading and unloading trucks/trailers when required.
- Organizing finished product in the yard using forklifts.
Qualifications and Skills
- Be able to read and understand basic drawings.
- Basic mathematics skills for marking out steel parts for fabrication.
- Strong teamwork skills.
- Familiar with using steel fabrication machines such as iron workers, breaks, shears, etc.
- Proficient with an oxy-acetylene torch is an asset but not required.
- Hard working and willing to work overtime when necessary.
