Job Overview
Are you passionate about food, really good coffee, and community? We are seeking an enthusiastic and reliable Café Team Member to join Stone Soup Café & Catering, a social enterprise of the Saint John Learning Exchange.
In this role, your primary focus will be preparing high-quality coffee and specialty beverages, while also supporting food preparation, catering orders, and daily kitchen operations. You will help create a welcoming, efficient, and community-focused environment where customers feel valued and every meal and beverage is prepared with care.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve a variety of coffee, tea, and specialty beverages according to established recipes and customer preferences.
- Prepare café menu items (including sandwiches, soups, baked goods, and daily specials).
- Assist with preparing and packaging catering orders.
- Ensure all food and drink items meet safety and quality standards.
- Follow food handling and sanitation guidelines to maintain a safe and clean workspace.
- Wash dishes and support daily cleaning and kitchen upkeep tasks.
- Restock supplies and help maintain an organized café and kitchen environment.
- Deliver friendly, welcoming customer service and create a positive experience for guests.
- Manage time effectively during busy periods while maintaining quality and efficiency.
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system, process transactions accurately, and troubleshoot issues as needed.
- Collaborate with the café team on seasonal drinks, specials, and menu ideas.
Requirements
- Previous café, barista, kitchen, or food service experience is an asset; we are willing to train the right person.
- Knowledge of food handling, sanitation, and safe food preparation practices is an asset.
- Strong customer service and communication skills with a friendly, approachable demeanor.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment.
- Comfortable multitasking between beverage preparation, food preparation, customer service, and cleaning duties.
- Strong cash handling skills and experience using POS systems is an asset.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform tasks requiring physical stamina.
