Transmission Technician / Mechanic – Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and dependable Transmission Technician / Mechanic to join our growing transmission repair shop. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, experience working on automotive drivetrains, and the ability to diagnose and repair drivetrain related issues efficiently and professionally. This position requires attention to detail, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
Position Summary
The Transmission Technician will be responsible for diagnosing transmission and drivability concerns, removing and replacing transmissions, performing repairs and maintenance, conducting road tests, and ensuring all work is completed safely and to a high standard. Candidates should be comfortable working on both automatic and manual transmissions in a fast-paced shop environment.
Primary Responsibilities Transmission Removal & Replacement
- Remove and replace automatic and manual transmissions on domestic and import vehicles.
- Remove and reinstall related drivetrain components including transfer cases, differentials, axles, driveshafts, clutches, flywheels, torque converters, and transmission coolers.
- Perform transmission installation procedures according to manufacturer specifications.
- Inspect related components for wear or damage during teardown and reassembly.
- Ensure all installations are completed correctly and efficiently to avoid comebacks.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose transmission performance issues using scan tools, pressure gauges, and diagnostic equipment.
- Identify mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and drivability problems.
- Interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and repair accordingly.
- Troubleshoot shifting concerns, slipping, noises, leaks, vibrations, and driveline issues.
- Perform basic electrical diagnostics related to transmission systems.
Road Testing & Quality Control
- Conduct pre-repair and post-repair road tests to verify customer concerns and confirm repairs.
- Evaluate vehicle operation under various driving conditions.
- Ensure completed repairs meet shop quality standards and customer expectations.
- Communicate findings clearly with management and service advisors.
Shop Maintenance & Organization
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
- Properly store tools and equipment after use. (Tools are provided)
- Follow all safety procedures and shop policies.
- Dispose of fluids and materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Assist in maintaining shop cleanliness and organization throughout the facility.
Additional Duties
- Assist other technicians with difficult diagnoses or repairs.
- Keep accurate records of work completed and parts used.
- Stay current with evolving transmission technologies and repair procedures.
- Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Previous automotive or transmission repair experience is preferred.
- Strong mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting ability.
- Ability to operate diagnostic scanners and shop equipment.
- Experience with drivetrain, clutch, and differential work is considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to lift heavy components and work in physically demanding conditions.
- Strong work ethic, punctuality, and attention to detail.
