F.H. Collins Secondary School is currently seeking a passionate educator to join our dynamic learning community. We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the F.H.Collins Secondary School team. FH Collins sits alongside the Yukon River; we acknowledge, respect, and are grateful for the opportunity to work, learn and play within the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. F.H.C is a dual-track English/French Immersion school serving approximately 800 students in grades 8 through 12. We provide students with a diverse range of academic, athletic performance, outdoor/experiential, trades, and arts programs. We are proud of our strong academic programming, cultural diversity, and commitment to meeting the needs of all learners. Our goal is to have a vibrant First Nations language program in our school.

Position: Gwich’in Language and Culture teacher (8-12)
FTE: 1.0
Start Date: August 20, 2026
End Date: June 11, 2027
Reporting to the Principal of FH Collins Secondary School, the successful candidate will be a full member of the teaching staff. This role is critical in the successful development and implementation of the Gwich‘in Language & Culture program.
The focus for this position will be to teach, promote and support the Gwich‘in language and culture in the school. It is imperative that one be able to maintain positive relationships with secondary school students, and staff, and offer a language and culture program that is engaging and culturally relevant.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Demonstrated language proficiency (read, write and speak) to deliver the Gwich‘in language and culture program at the secondary school level;

Demonstrated and ongoing commitment to improve language proficiency;

Extensive knowledge and awareness of Yukon First Nations/ Gwich‘in First Nation culture, traditional practices, values and beliefs as well as a good understanding of the past and current issues in education, heritage and languages
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:
The ideal candidate will possess these
qualifications, skills, and knowledge, and also demonstrate suitability for the
role and organizational culture:

Strong interest and ability to teach Gwich’in;

Strong classroom management skills;

Ability to adapt and modify curriculum to address students‘ needs and gifts to ensure that all students experience success in this program;

Ability to connect and collaborate with teachers, school based staff, parents and/or caregivers;

Willingness to actively promote Gwich‘in and culture within school programming and environment;
-
Ability to work as a team member and a willingness and enthusiasm to participate in all staff meetings, school wide functions and initiatives, as well as participating in Yukon First Nations Language Teacher professional development;

Develop collaborative relationships with language professionals at Kwanlin Dün First Nation, Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, (and other Yukon First Nations) and Yukon Native Language Centre.

Preference will be given to Gwich‘in language qualified citizens of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation
