Position Overview
MML Mooniron Metal Ltd. is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Technical Drafter & Estimator to manage the complete workflow for custom metal flashing production.
The successful candidate will convert architectural drawings, field measurements, customer sketches, and project requirements into accurate fabrication drawings and machine-ready files. This role will also prepare quotations, coordinate production requirements with the shop floor, communicate with customers, and ensure approved orders are properly scheduled and released for fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Drafting and Cut-Sheet Preparation
- Review architectural drawings, specifications, customer sketches, and field measurements.
- Prepare accurate 2D and 3D fabrication and shop drawings for custom metal flashing.
- Produce detailed cut sheets showing stretch-outs, bend locations, hems, angles, dimensions, and material allowances.
- Account for material thickness, bend deductions, fabrication tolerances, and machine limitations.
- Verify measurements, profiles, quantities, finishes, gauges, and other project requirements before drawings are released.
- Identify missing or conflicting information and obtain clarification before quoting or production.
- Prepare machine-ready digital files in the required format.
2. Estimating and Quotation Preparation
- Perform material takeoffs and calculate required quantities.
- Confirm available material gauges, finishes, colours, and inventory with the machinery and production departments.
- Estimate material, labour, machine time, waste factors, and other production costs.
- Prepare clear and accurate customer quotations.
- Coordinate with the machinery section foreman to confirm shop capacity, expected lead times, and production availability before committing to delivery dates.
- Review quotations for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with the customer’s requirements.
3. Customer Communication and Order Finalization
- Submit quotations and preliminary drawings to customers for review and approval.
- Respond to customer questions and provide technical clarification regarding profiles, dimensions, materials, and finishes.
- Revise drawings, quantities, pricing, or delivery timelines when requested.
- Follow up on outstanding quotations and approvals.
- Obtain written customer approval before releasing work for fabrication.
- Maintain organized records of correspondence, revisions, approvals, and pricing.
4. Production Coordination and Hand-Off
- Prepare a complete production package after customer approval.
- Ensure the package includes approved drawings, finalized cut sheets, quantities, material specifications, finishes, and machine-ready files.
- Release approved production information to the machinery department.
- Enter and track each approved order within the production schedule.
- Coordinate with the shop foreman regarding priorities, material availability, lead times, and production changes.
- Address technical questions or discrepancies identified during fabrication.
- Confirm that production documentation matches the approved customer requirements.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma or degree in architectural technology, mechanical drafting, engineering technology, construction technology, or a related field.
- Previous experience in technical drafting, sheet-metal fabrication, metal flashing, cladding, roofing, or a related manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Strong proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar drafting and fabrication software.
- Strong understanding of sheet-metal fabrication, flashing profiles, bend allowances, stretch-outs, hems, gauges, finishes, and material tolerances.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, specifications, sketches, and field measurements.
- Experience preparing estimates, material takeoffs, quotations, and production documents.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to drawing and pricing accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, estimators, office staff, machine operators, and production supervisors.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple jobs at different stages of drafting, quoting, approval, and production.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating closely with the office and production teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience preparing flashing profiles and cut sheets for brakes, folders, shears, roll formers, CNC equipment, or similar sheet-metal machinery.
- Familiarity with common flashing and cladding materials, including prefinished steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper.
- Experience working with custom metal flashing for roofing, wall cladding, windows, doors, parapets, soffits, and building-envelope applications.
- Knowledge of production scheduling and inventory-control systems.
- Experience in a fast-paced custom fabrication environment.

Pay: $18.00-$25.00 per hour
