Second Mate, Offshore Factory Freezer Vessel

We are currently recruiting a Second Mate to join the deck leadership team aboard one of our offshore groundfish vessels. Reporting to the Captain and First Mate, the Second Mate supports the safe navigation and operation of the vessel, oversees bridge watchkeeping and safety programs, and assists with the coordination of deck and fishing operations.
Responsibilities:
- Support the Captain and First Mate in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the vessel.
- Stand navigational watches and perform bridge, anchor, dock, and safety watches in accordance with established bridge resource management practices.
- Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with company policies, safe work practices, and regulatory requirements, while identifying and reporting operational hazards.
- Coordinate and maintain the vessel's Safety Management System (SMS), including inspections, maintenance, and documentation of safety and emergency equipment.
- Assist with planning and coordinating emergency drills, ensuring crew readiness and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Support fishing operations by assisting with the deployment, retrieval, maintenance, and repair of fishing gear, while supervising deck activities as assigned.
- Supervise and participate in the maintenance of decks, deck machinery, fishing equipment, and vessel exterior to ensure operational readiness.
- Assist with incident reporting, investigations, and the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Support the receipt, inventory, and storage of vessel supplies, fishing gear, and operational equipment.
- Participate in a trip-on/trip-off rotation and work collaboratively with the opposite rotation while in port to ensure effective communication and operational continuity.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Captain or First Mate.
Qualifications:
- Fishing Master's Class IV Certificate of Competency or higher.
- Valid Transport Canada Seafarer's Medical Certificate and Marine Emergency Duties (MED A1 or DVS) certification.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in the commercial fishing industry, preferably aboard an offshore fishing vessel.
- Demonstrated knowledge of vessel navigation, bridge watchkeeping, factory freezer trawler operations, fishing gear, and deck equipment.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to supervise crew and respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Working knowledge of Transport Canada regulations, occupational health and safety requirements, and company Safety Management Systems.
- Commitment to safety, professionalism, teamwork, and responsible fishing practices.
