Maintenance Personnel (Internal)
Salary: $62,880 to $82,788 per year
Location: High Prairie
July 1, 2026 to Ongoing
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency
- A clean vulnerable sector criminal record check prior to commencement
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
- A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
Assets:
- Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System
- Experience with Building Automation Systems
- Journeyperson certification in a compatible trade
Nature and Scope of Work:
Reporting to the Manager, Facilities, Maintenance & Operations, this position is responsible for a variety of tasks dedicated to maintaining and improving Northern Lakes College facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment. Working with minimal supervision as part of the Facilities & Ancillary Services (FAS) maintenance team. Maintenance Personnel undertake routine preventative and predictive maintenance, under the guidance of the Manager and responds to demand maintenance requests as required while adhering to strict safety precautions and following prescribed safety regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maximizing Equipment Operation
- Service of mechanical equipment, boilers, compressors, chillers, pumps, expansion tanks, furnaces, fans, electrical equipment, lights, heating units, etc.
- Undertake regular inspections of equipment and record operational data
- Perform preventative maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, repair and replacement of belts, indicators, sensors, oil, etc.
- Through the course of performing field maintenance identify potential areas requiring further remediation and action immediately or communicate such to the Manager
- Record the use of all parts and materials taken from inventory in Maintenance Management Order System (MMOS) System
- Provide support to staff plumbers, other FAS team members, and contractors to undertake major replacement and rebuilds
- Including travel to off-site locations to perform the same
Maximizing Building Operation and Usage
- Service to campus facilities, outbuildings, and grounds
- Operate a variety of power equipment in the maintenance including forklifts, skid steer loaders, lawn tractors, chainsaws, brush saws, man-lifts, end dump trucks (1, 3, and 5 ton), table saw, chop saw, band saw, welder, circular saw, jig saw, pneumatic tools, drills, etc.
- Utilize a multitude of hand tools including hammer, screwdriver, wrenches, etc.
- Assemble furniture and fixtures, repair furniture, install furniture, and room dividers
- Provide support to staff and contract tradesmen, other FAS team members, contractors in the repair and maintenance
- Construction of offices
- Bathroom renovations
- Painting and plastering
- Hanging doors
- Installing flooring
- Record stock inventory levels of supplies and materials used in the course of repair and renovation
Perform Fleet Vehicle Maintenance Tasks
- Changing oil, wiper blades, etc.
- Inspecting fleet vehicles for fluid levels, lights, obvious defects and maintenance concerns, and providing action where able
General Labour
- Able to safely lift and carry weights of ten (10) lbs regularly through the course of the day
- Able to safely lift and carry materials up to one-hundred (100) lbs when moving, loading, unloading, transporting furniture, materials, building materials, and equipment etc.
- Undertake lengthy periods of sustained strenuous activity such as shoveling snow, digging, jack hammering, working from a ladder at height, working in stooped and confined spaces subject to extreme heat, cold, and noise etc.
- Arrange for and undertake the disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals
- May also be required to oversee summer students to itinerant staff at various locations
- Required to evaluate and report on contracted services
- Other duties as necessary
Skills/Knowledge:
- Good working knowledge of common shop hand tools, power tools, and equipment
- Awareness and skills associated with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, at an experienced “handyman level”
- Mechanically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain tools, equipment, and building systems.
- General automotive knowledge and aptitude
- Awareness and familiarity with landscaping and outdoor equipment
- Self-awareness and ability to safely assess physical limitations and abilities
