The Music Psychotherapist is responsible to provide client and family centred music psychotherapy, music therapy, and adapted music education services to children and adolescents with special needs and developmental differences receiving rehabilitation services from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides music psychotherapy services for clients of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital within identified programs and services (i.e. inpatient rehabilitation, Music and Arts, and/or Neuromotor Outpatient clinics)
- Provides music psychotherapy and music therapy assessment, music-centred intervention, outcome measures, and transfer of care which is client and family-centred, goal directed, evidence-based and informed by best practices
- Adherence to documentation as per Holland Bloorview documentation standards and policies
- Attends and participates in staff meetings and special events
- Participates in quality management activities and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment
- Identifies learning needs and establishes goals
- Provides student recruitment, training and supervision, as required
- Participates in research activities, as required
- Maintains a working knowledge of specialized music equipment and technology
- Maintains traditional and adaptive music instruments and adapted music technology
- Provides regular in-service activities to promote faculty development and client/family education. This can include presentations, development of training materials, course delivery, and more
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Master of Music Therapy or equivalent required
- Certification and member in good standing with the CAMT (Canadian Association for Music Therapy) required
- Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Psychotherapy (Qualifying) status in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) required
- Qualified Supervisor according to CRPO and CAMT standards preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with practical music therapy preferred
- Minimum of 5 years clinical experience in pediatrics preferred
- Knowledge of music psychotherapy, music therapy, and adapted music education specific to pediatric rehabilitation required including related theories, models, and approaches required
- Knowledge of a wide variety of music psychotherapy and music therapy techniques required
- Experience in behaviour management techniques preferred
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment is an asset
- Reliable, punctual, regular attendance is required including evening and weekends required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are an asset
- Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload while setting priorities and meeting deadlines. Ability to operate independently as well as in consultation and collaboration with other professionals within a multidisciplinary team are an asset
- Solution-focused coaching and client and family centred training is an asset
Job Requirements
- Accomplished musical skill on at least one instrument/voice and good to very good musical skill on secondary instruments. Combination of instrument proficiency must include, but is not limited to, voice, piano, guitar, and percussion
- A working knowledge of pediatric child development
- A working knowledge of various modes, idioms, and musical styles
- A working knowledge of adapted music technology. This may include Garage Band, the Virtual Music Instrument, Soundbeam VI, looping pedals, and more
- Compliance with CRPO practices and standards
- Lifting of instruments up to 50 lbs
- Flexibility and nimbleness to meet the client and family in rehabilitation including a variety of music psychotherapy and music therapy interventions
- Music and instrument adaptation to ensure effective musical experiences for clients and families
- Safe and effective use of self in the provision of music psychotherapy and music therapy including the use of supervision, debriefing, and personal development
- Co-therapy skill sets including planning and debriefing
- Use of personal protective equipment and cleaning/maintenance of music instruments to ensure client safety
- Non-violent crisis intervention skills, client and family centred approach, behaviour management skills, and solution-focused coaching skills preferred
- Participation in the safety culture of Holland Bloorview that includes incident reporting, adherence to College (CRPO) requirements to report unprofessional and unsafe behaviour of any College registrant providing healthcare including suspected abuse of a client
- Knowledge and application of Microsoft 365 software
- Completion of client journey using Meditech software according to facility policies and procedures
- Use of established music psychotherapy and music therapy assessment tools appropriate to the pediatric population
- Use of outcome measures such as the Goal Attainment Scale
- Provision of music-centred interventions with a suitable aesthetic to client need
- Regular communication with clients and families as to the clinical process that is culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate, and accessible including attention to health literacy
- Consultation, as requested, for music psychotherapy related issues and equipment
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis
