About the role:
We are currently seeking a Senior Structural Designer to join our Press Team. This role will be responsible for designing innovative, cost-effective, and manufacturable folding carton packaging solutions while serving as the technical lead for the Structural Design department. This role works closely with Customers, Management, Sales, Production, Prepress, and Quality to develop structural packaging solutions that meet customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities. In addition to performing all structural design functions, the Senior Structural Designer provides leadership, technical guidance, mentoring, and coaching to the design team, promotes best practices, and supports continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.
Compensation:
Expected Compensation: $60,000 – $80,000 per year. Compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications and falls within the expected range for this role.

Design & Technical Responsibilities:
- Meet with stakeholders to gather information, analyze objectives, and develop packaging solutions that exceed customer, sales, and manufacturing expectations.
- Create structural designs using ArtiosCAD while considering manufacturing constraints, material selection, functionality, and cost optimization.
- Produce samples using the Kongsberg CAD table and create full-colour mock-ups with assistance from the Graphic Design team.
- Prioritize projects based on business requirements while managing multiple deadlines.
- Maintain accurate documentation of customer specifications, drawings, revisions, and project files.
- Update ERP software with structural design information.
- Utilize Cape Pack software to develop packaging specifications and optimize packaging performance.
- Utilize ArtiosCAD for 3D renderings and efficient layouts for blanked and non-blanked jobs.
- Operate the Kongsberg cutting table for customer samples, coating blankets, and production mock-ups.
- Order tooling and design-related supplies as required.
- Provide technical support during production trials, troubleshooting, and customer approvals.
- Collaborate with Production to improve manufacturability, reduce waste, and optimize production efficiencies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Senior Leadership Responsibilities:
- Serve as the senior technical resource for all structural design activities.
- Lead, mentor, coach, and develop junior and intermediate Structural Designers, providing technical guidance and ongoing support.
- Review structural designs completed by team members to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, quality, and compliance with company standards before release.
- Assist in assigning and prioritizing workloads within the Structural Design department to meet customer deadlines.
- Lead complex customer projects from concept through production implementation.
- Participate in customer meetings involving technically challenging packaging solutions.
- Recommend innovative structural designs that improve functionality, reduce material costs, and enhance production efficiency.
- Develop and maintain structural design standards, best practices, and documentation procedures.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement within design processes and manufacturing workflows.
- Provide technical support to Sales, Production, Quality, and Customer Service regarding packaging design solutions.
- Assist management with evaluating new materials, software, equipment, and structural design technologies.
- Support training and onboarding of new employees within the Structural Design department.
- Act as the department lead in the absence of management when required.
Education & Skills Requirements:
- Diploma or Degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Technology, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in structural packaging design within the folding carton industry.
- Extensive experience designing folding cartons using ArtiosCAD.
- Advanced knowledge of carton manufacturing processes, including printing, die cutting, folding, gluing, and finishing.
- Strong understanding of paperboard grades, substrates, and converting processes.
- Expert knowledge of manufacturable packaging design and cost optimization.
- Experience with Windows Server
- Advanced experience using: ArtiosCAD, Cape Pack, Kongsberg CAD Tables, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, ERP systems
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and coaching experience.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to work independently while leading cross-functional projects.
- Willingness to provide support outside normal working hours when required and participate in an on-call rotation.
