Job Description
Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a detail oriented and dependable Payroll and Benefits Clerk to join the Finance Department. This is a full time, permanent position that supports payroll processing, benefits administration, pension tracking, employee records, and related finance functions.
This role is ideal for someone who is organized, accurate, confidential, and comfortable working with numbers, deadlines, payroll systems, and employee information. The Payroll and Benefits Clerk plays an important role in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time, and that benefits and pension information is properly maintained.
About the Role
The Payroll and Benefits Clerk is responsible for maintaining payroll and benefits records, supporting regular payroll processing, assisting with benefit plan administration, and ensuring payroll information is accurate, confidential, and compliant with applicable legislation, policy, and internal procedures.
The successful candidate must be able to work in a busy office environment, manage competing deadlines, communicate professionally, and maintain strong attention to detail.
Duties and Responsibilities
Establish and maintain payroll master files for all employees, including earnings, deductions, employment terms, benefit plan information, pension information, and related payroll records.
Compile, review, and support regular payroll processing for salaried and hourly employees.
Process payroll adjustments, deductions, benefits, pension contributions, and other related payroll entries.
Support benefits administration, including benefit plan renewals, premium updates, arrears tracking, bill payments, and employee benefit records.
Maintain Tl’azt’en Nation pension plan information for employee groups.
Ensure payroll records are accurate, current, confidential, and properly filed.
Apply payroll principles, procedures, policies, and applicable legislation.
Interpret and apply Tl’azt’en Nation policies and procedures related to payroll, benefits, and employee records.
Support data entry, reporting, account balancing, and payroll reconciliations.
Assist with controlling and balancing payroll related accounts, ledgers, and reports.
Provide payroll and benefits related information to employees, managers, and external contacts as appropriate.
Respond to payroll and benefits questions in a professional, confidential, and timely manner.
Prepare reports, forms, records, and correspondence related to payroll and benefits.
Meet payroll deadlines and support accurate processing of time sensitive information.
Maintain effective working relationships with staff, managers, Finance, HR, benefit providers, pension contacts, and other internal and external partners.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Finance Controller.
Qualifications
Experience as a Payroll Clerk, Benefits Clerk, Finance Clerk, Payroll Administrator, or similar role.
Familiarity with general accounting principles and payroll practices.
Experience with payroll data collection, entry, reporting, and reconciliation.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge of payroll related legislation, policies, and procedures.
Experience with payroll software, such as Payworks, is considered an asset.
Strong math, numerical, and data entry skills.
Ability to make accurate calculations and balance accounts.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete work within established deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to handle moderately complex payroll and benefits questions professionally.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, Windows based systems, and common office equipment.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Post secondary education in accounting, business administration, payroll, bookkeeping, or a related field is considered an asset.
