Note: Due to the nature of this role, it is not an entry-level position. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of experience in confined space operations – either as an entrant to perform work or as a confined space attendant.
About InfoSignal
InfoSignal is an industrial technology company that provides innovative digital solutions to the modern industrial workplace.
We are re-inventing what it means to monitor a confined space safely and efficiently.
For decades, confined spaces have been monitored using a confined space attendant, otherwise known as a manhole watch or safety watch. However, the factor of human error, and the inability for the attendant to see inside the space itself, poses a significant risk to workers inside. That’s where InfoSignal’s modern digital solutions come in, reducing safety risks while increasing productivity.
With Industry 4.0 on the rise, we harness innovation to offer modern solutions that deliver new safety measures for industrial facilities. Integrating our technology into everyday operations during maintenance, turnarounds, and projects generates value through higher-visibility levels and significantly improves safety and efficiency.
Join us in “Transforming the Industrial Workplace into a Digital Wonderland.”
Role
Digital Confined Space Monitoring (DCSM) – Operator
The DCSM Operator position combines the health, safety, and operations knowledge and experience of confined space attendants with digital, connected technologies that enhance communications and increase the visibility of the status of confined space entrants.
The DCSM Operator role consists of two distinct roles in one:
Monitoring
You will monitor the safety of workers in confined spaces from a monitoring station through the use of live HD video feeds, direct intercom communications, continuous gas detection, and a digital access control tracking system. You will initiate emergency response as required and ensure the safety of workers at all times.
Field Support/Roving
You will install, inspect, and maintain DCSM equipment such as cameras, intercoms, alarms, and gas detection. While fulfilling the roving duties, you will be the boots on the ground support for the monitoring
operator and the liaison between the technology and the workers in the confined spaces. You will enter confined spaces, so understanding hazard assessment and the scope of work in the vessel is a vital part of your duties.
You and a partner will switch between the monitoring and roving duties on a set rotation throughout the workday.
This role will teach successful candidates many transferable skills in today's emerging digital transformation economies, such as digital communications, computer networks, video analytics, and data analytics, to name a few.
Responsibilities
- Reporting to the project supervisor, personnel are accountable for, but not limited to:
- Monitoring the safety of confined space entrants and ensuring the emergency response procedure is triggered as required.
- Representing our organization professionally and ethically.
- Supporting Corporate Health & Safety, Work Methods, and Technical Training areas to achieve a positive, resilient safety culture based on high-performance expectations.
- Reporting incidents or any near-miss immediately to a supervisor.
- Demonstrate self-discipline, safety, accountability, focus, innovation, achievement-oriented, and ability to work in a collaborative environment.
Monitoring, support and subject matter expertise in:
- Confined space operations
- Gas detection
- Emergency response procedures
- Legislated responsibilities of confined space attendants
- Installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of DCSM technology
- Quality Assurance and Quality Control of equipment and work methods
- Training and education of workers using the DCSM system
Qualifications
Note: Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this role, candidates must be completely fluent (read, write, speak) in English to a native speaker proficiency. There are many communications through intercom systems and communications during safety-sensitive situations which require absolute clarity, so excellent communications skills are quintessential to the success of candidates.
- An aptitude test may be used to determine suitability for computer-intensive positions, assess comfort level with computers, and overall competency in navigating complex software.
- Previous experience in an Industrial Safety Setting (Must have previous experience as a confined space monitor or entrant). Preference will be given to individuals with 5+ years of experience and who have been in various industrial settings.
- Experience and deep understanding of gas detection equipment are assets.
- Must possess a thorough understanding of all Health & Safety regulatory requirements
- Must be 18 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Education or certification in IT/computer-science related disciplines is an asset
- Education or certification in instrumentation, electrical, or similar trades is an asset
Must have standard safety tickets in good standing:
- Confined Space Entry & Monitoring
- Fall Protection
- H2S Alive
- CSO
Physical Demands
DCSM Operator is a very physically demanding position. You will be required to handle, install, inspect, and move sensitive electronic equipment, including the carrying and pulling cables. You will also sit for extended periods in front of a computer and perform repetitive movements. For your safety, you must be able to perform the following duties continuously throughout a 12-hour shift in potentially harsh environmental conditions (hot, cold, wind, rain, snow, other) for extended durations:
- Entering and egressing confined spaces through tight access points
- Lifting and carrying 50 lbs
- Overhead lifting and carrying 20 lbs
- pushing and pulling 50 lbs
- Trunk rotation
- Walking on uneven ground
- Climbing ladders and stairs
- Working at heights +\- 100 ft
- Crouching, squatting and kneeling
- Wearing a respirator for extended periods
