Position Overview
The CTS Teacher will deliver engaging Career and Technology Studies programming for junior and senior high school students, providing opportunities for students to explore career pathways, develop practical skills, and connect their learning to future education and employment opportunities.
The successful candidate will be passionate about helping students discover their interests and strengths while creating hands-on learning experiences both in and outside the classroom. Depending on school needs and the successful candidate's qualifications, the position may also include teaching core academic courses.
Key Responsibilities
Career and Technology Studies Programming
- Plan and deliver engaging CTS courses aligned with Alberta Education curriculum requirements.
- Create meaningful opportunities for students to explore career interests, workplace skills, trades, entrepreneurship, technology, and post-secondary pathways.
- Develop hands-on, project-based learning experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world applications.
- Support students in developing employability skills, career awareness, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
- Promote student engagement through innovative and relevant CTS programming.
Outdoor and Land-Based Learning
- Integrate outdoor education and land-based learning opportunities into CTS programming whenever possible.
- Collaborate with the Outdoor Learning Department, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to provide authentic learning experiences.
- Support students in developing connections to the land, culture, and traditional knowledge through experiential learning opportunities.
- Participate in outdoor education activities, field experiences, and school-wide initiatives.
Classroom Instruction
- Teach assigned junior and senior high school courses, which may include core academic subjects based on qualifications and school needs.
- Develop lesson plans, assessments, and instructional strategies that meet diverse student learning needs.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that promotes student success and well-being.
- Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learners and learning styles.
Student Support and Engagement
- Build positive relationships with students and encourage them to pursue their interests, goals, and future aspirations.
- Collaborate with Student Success Teachers, administration, guidance staff, and families to support student achievement.
- Encourage student participation in extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, career exploration activities, and community initiatives.
- Support students in developing pathways toward graduation, post-secondary education, apprenticeships, training programs, and employment.
Collaboration and School Culture
- Work collaboratively as part of a highly engaged and supportive school team.
- Contribute positively to school improvement initiatives and student success planning.
- Participate actively in staff meetings, professional learning opportunities, school events, and community activities.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to support school-wide programs and initiatives.
- Foster strong relationships with students, families, Elders, and community members.
Cultural Integration
- Support and promote Stoney Nakoda language, culture, traditions, and values throughout the learning environment.
- Incorporate Indigenous perspectives and culturally responsive practices into teaching and learning experiences.
- Work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community representatives to enrich student learning.
Qualifications Required
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate or eligibility for Alberta certification.
- Bachelor of Education or related teaching degree.
- Strong understanding of Alberta Education curriculum and assessment practices.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to student success and holistic education.
Preferred
- CTS teaching experience and/or related industry experience.
- Experience teaching junior and senior high school students.
- Experience with project-based, experiential, or outdoor learning.
- Knowledge of Indigenous education and culturally responsive teaching practices.
- Experience working with Indigenous students, families, and communities.
- Ability to teach additional core subject areas is considered an asset.
