Your Opportunity:
This role is part of the larger multi-disciplinary team of reporting to the Manager of Inpatient Psychiatry, at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. The Registered Nurse/ Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN) will provide assessment, consultation and liaison services in partnership with the Acute Care setting of the Emergency Department in the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, working to full scope of practice. This position provides quality, client focused, culturally appropriate Mental Health and Addiction intervention and stabilization, as well as continuity of care for patients who require support in relation to Mental Health and Addiction. Working within the RN/RPN scope of practice this role may also provide support in the form of psychosocial intervention, conduct risk assessments, and complete referrals. Clinically focused liaison and consultation to colleagues and with community service providers is also required. The RN/RPN must be able to assess and consult on substantial disorder of thought, mood, perception, orientation, or memory that impairs judgment, behavior, and capacity to recognize reality or ability to meet ordinary demands of life. The RN/RPN provides assessment of mental status, suicide risk, social and family interactions, and responses to treatment goals and care plans utilizing a strength-based, biopsychosocial, and patient-centered approach to care. Services will be provided primarily in acute care settings; however, discharge planning, community connection, and community follow up is also a component of this role.

PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 - $55.79 per hour. Upon being entered into the register as a Registered Nurse, the rate of pay will be adjusted in accordance with the UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)
Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years' experience in the last 5 working with Mental Health and Addiction programs. Advanced knowledge of mental health, mental illness, addiction, and concurrent mental health and addiction disorders; as well as evidence-informed treatment and an ability to identify and provide support is required. Skilled and knowledgeable in mental status assessments, suicide risk assessments, and good understanding of non-suicidal self-injury. Understanding of the Mental Health Act Legislation of Alberta. A solid understanding of medications used for mental illness, along with knowing the side effects that may occur with some psychotropic medication and the appropriate medical interventions needed to manage these side effects are crucial. Ability to thoroughly and accurately collect and document information in a concise, professional, and timely manner. Excellent written, verbal and computer processing skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively function in a stressful environment and resolve conflict. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals. Ability to be self-directed and exercise independent decision making, nursing judgment and critical thinking skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills to efficiently organize and prioritize workload. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification and Suicide Prevention, Risk Assessment and Management (SPRAM) required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Competency in Connect Care. Knowledge of the continuum of substance use and addictions, stages of change and harm reduction strategies are preferred. Experience in acute and community care is preferred.
