We are seeking an experienced and motivated Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS) to lead our welding and fabrication team. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising welders, fitters, and fabrication personnel while ensuring compliance with all applicable welding codes, quality standards, and safety requirements.
Position Summary
The Certified Welding Supervisor will oversee daily welding and fabrication operations, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. This leadership role requires strong technical welding knowledge, team management skills, and experience working within a CWB-certified fabrication environment.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Team Leadership
- Supervise, coordinate, and schedule the activities of welders, fitters, and fabrication personnel.
- Plan and prioritize work to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
- Monitor workflow, productivity, and labour utilization to maximize efficiency.
- Provide coaching, training, and mentorship to welding staff.
- Participate in hiring activities, including welding tests and practical assessments for prospective employees.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback to team members.
Welding Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all welding activities comply with applicable CSA standards, CWB requirements, welding procedures, and customer specifications.
- Inspect fabricated assemblies and completed welds for quality, accuracy, and conformance to drawings and specifications.
- Verify proper implementation of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Welding Procedure Data Sheets (WPDS).
- Identify and resolve welding defects and quality issues.
- Maintain welding documentation, records, and traceability requirements.
- Work closely with Quality Control personnel to ensure all inspection and testing requirements are met.
CWB Certification & Audits
- Act as the primary liaison with Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) representatives.
- Maintain compliance with CSA W47.1 and all applicable certification requirements.
- Coordinate and support CWB audits, inspections, and certification renewals.
- Ensure welder qualifications and certifications remain current and properly documented.
Health & Safety
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout the facility.
- Ensure all employees follow company safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and hazard assessments.
- Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions where required.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe operation of welding and fabrication equipment.
Continuous Improvement
- Recommend process improvements to increase productivity and reduce waste.
- Assist with shop layout, workflow planning, and material handling improvements.
- Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS) designation recognized by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB).
- Minimum 10 years of structural steel welding and fabrication experience.
- Minimum 5 years of supervisory or leadership experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of:
- CSA W47.1
- CSA W59
- Structural steel fabrication practices
- Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
- Blueprint and shop drawing interpretation
- Welding inspection principles and quality control procedures
- Experience working in a CWB-certified fabrication facility.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and production documentation.
Preferred
- CWB Level 1 or Level 2 Welding Inspector certification.
- Welding engineering technologist or related technical education.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, crouch, twist, and reach regularly.
- Perform repetitive movements.
- Lift, carry, and handle materials and fabrication components.
- Work in a manufacturing and welding shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and welding fumes.
