JOB OVERVIEW
As a Intermediate Utility Locator , you will lead field utility locate operations by applying advanced technical expertise, ensuring high-quality deliverables, and providing mentorship to less-experienced team members. You will play a key role in coordinating complex locates, reviewing deliverables for accuracy and compliance, and enhancing LN’s field practices through continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and execute accurate and thorough underground utility locates across diverse project types (electrical, water, gas, sewer, telecommunications).
Review and interpret complex site plans, construction drawings, GIS data, as-builts, and utility records to develop effective locate strategies.
Validate and supervise field locating activities, ensuring deliverables meet LN’s technical standards and client expectations.
Provide direction, training, and mentorship to Junior and Intermediate Locators, fostering technical competency and safety awareness.
Generate, review, and approve clear, comprehensive documentation, including locate sketches, field notes, reports, and digital records.
Act as primary field contact with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders to resolve issues and communicate locate findings professionally.
Identify opportunities to optimize field processes, improve reporting quality, and implement best practices in equipment use and data management.
Participate in safety meetings and promote a strong safety culture in all field activities; ensure strict compliance with company and regulatory safety protocols.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in utility locating, subsurface investigations, or related field services with demonstrated technical leadership.
Proven ability to interpret and analyze engineering drawings, GIS databases, and utility records.
Advanced proficiency with locator equipment (EM, GPR), GPS/GIS systems, and field data collection tools.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with experience liaising with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
Strong organizational skills with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and deadlines.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with a clean abstract.
Industry certifications (e.g., UALL, TALL, PALL, Locating 101) and safety certifications (CSTS, First Aid) are a strong asset.
