We are a private luxury property looking for a Chef to prepare wholesome, primarily vegetarian and vegan meals for a family and their guests while they are staying on the island.
Join our friendly team for the summer on stunning James Island, located less than 3 km off the coast of Sidney, B.C. on Vancouver Island. James Island is the second-largest privately owned Gulf Island and features a private 18-hole Jack Nicklaus signature golf course.
The island offers a fun and unique work environment surrounded by the natural beauty of the West Coast, including opportunities for wildlife viewing and whale watching during your daily commute.
QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Prior experience as a private chef or in a high-standard professional kitchen• Appreciation for vegetarian and vegan cooking• Passion for organic and locally sourced ingredients• Experience across all aspects of the kitchen• Highly organized, adaptable, and solutions-focused• Strong time management skills and attention to detail• Effective communication and collaboration skills• Interest in current and evolving food trends• Comfortable with some outdoor cooking• Capable of working independently in a private, well-equipped kitchen• Professional and discreet, with the ability to work independently and with limited guest interaction• Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs• Comfortable travelling to and working at a second property on the Sunshine Coast when required• Valid Class 5 or 7 British Columbia driver’s licence (or equivalent)• Food Safe Level 2 certification is an asset
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Managing provisioning, sourcing, inventory, and food budgets with an emphasis on quality and consistency• Planning and preparing daily meals for 2–12 guests, along with crew meals of approximately 14 for lunch and 5 for dinner• Creating refined, well-balanced dishes centred on vegetarian and vegan cuisine, with the addition of fish and poultry• Preparing outdoor dining experiences with the team on the island• Managing daily kitchen operations, including organization, cleanliness, and Food Safe practices• Supporting and guiding food servers to ensure smooth and high-quality service• Coordinating external caterers for larger events• Preparing take-out lunches as required

- Local transportation in Saanichton is limited; reliable transportation to the public wharf is required. From there, staff are transported to James Island by boat shuttle• Occasional travel to another property in B.C. may be required; candidates should be comfortable travelling by boat, seaplane, or helicopter• Successful candidates will be required to complete a criminal record check• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada, hold a valid passport, and be eligible to enter the US
