Calian is proud to maintain a long-standing contractual relationship with the Department of National Defence to provide healthcare services to the Canadian Armed Forces. Through our Health Services Contract, Calian hires healthcare professionals who contribute to the health and well-being of our military personnel across Canada.
Calian is currently seeking a civilian Physician – Flight Surgeon with specialized training, to practice at the medical clinic at CFB Esquimalt on a full-time basis (preferred), however we are open to discuss part-time as an option. Physician – Flight Surgeons specialize in the physical examination, diagnosis, and management of aviation medicine.
The range of activities may encompass health promotion, prevention of diseases and injuries, diagnosis, occupational health, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative care, and support services.
Flight Surgeons function independently as medical advisors and as health care providers and act as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the primary care setting such as Care Delivery Units, treatment rooms, and cadet camps. Within the Care Delivery Unit, rostered patients are generally assigned to a specified Physician – Flight Surgeon who is ultimately responsible for coordinating and managing the care of their assigned patients. Patients access Physician – Flight Surgeon services through scheduled appointments, walk-ins, and at other times during the day when medically indicated.
- Practice medicine in accordance with the applicable provincial and national regulatory standards and in accordance with Canadian Forces Health Service policy and guidance
- Deliver aerospace occupational health services such as, but not limited to:
i. Investigate, treat and follow-up any medical problems involving aircrew in accordance with related orders and directives;
ii. Perform medical examinations on aircrew applicants in accordance with related orders and directives;
iii. Performing specialized medicals, such as Periodic Health Assessments, Aircrew Medicals IAW Aerospace Medical Authority Directive 100-01, Medical Standards for CF Aircrew
iv. Ensure required aircrew medical examinations are performed on time;
v. Assigning and reviewing occupational flight or dive restrictions;
vi. Clinically investigating and reporting aeromedical or diving incidents involving aircrew or divers;
vii. Develop and maintain rapport with aircrew;
viii. Acquire and maintain familiarity with air operations;
ix. Investigate and report aeromedical incidents involving aircrew;
x. Provide initial response to and contribute to the investigation of aircraft accidents and incidents. This does not include attending the location of an aircraft crash;
xi. Participate as a witness for Flight Safety Investigations or Aircraft Accident Board of Inquiries;
xii. Annually review and be familiar with medical crash response procedures and inspect medical crash response equipment;
xiii. Train Health Services staff in crash response procedures;
xiv. Liaise with Preventive Medicine Technicians on matters of industrial medicine and environmental hazards related to air operations;
xv. Maintain familiarity with life support and personal protective equipment and liaise with Aircraft Life Support Equipment (ALSE) and Safety Systems personnel;
xvi. Provide instruction on appropriate aeromedical topics to aircrew trainees; Provide continuing aeromedical education to experienced aircrew on a regular basis;
xvii. Support Aerospace Medical Training (AMT) as per CFP 214, Section 705.2;
xviii. Provide education and advice on Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) hazards and safety in the aircrew environment;
xix. Provide education and advice on LASER hazards and safety in the aircrew environment;
xx. Establish and maintain a personal program of continuing education
xxi. in aerospace and environmental medicine IAW 1 Cdn Air Division Order 1-240; and
xxii. Perform other duties as directed by the Garrison/Base/Wing Surgeon or Senior Flight Surgeon at his/her Garrison/Base/Wing.
- Provide comprehensive primary medical care to patients with acute and chronic health conditions including referral to other health care providers when warranted;
- Communicate with Senior Medical Authority on relevant clinical matters such as CF Spectrum of Care, complex patients requiring multidisciplinary intervention, individual operational readiness;
- Maintain patient medical information in Electronic Health Record and patient health records;
- Provide clinical supervision and oversight to other members of the health care team within the Care Delivery Unit (CDU) that are delivering care to patients assigned to the Primary Care Physician, including Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners (NP), Medical Technicians, and Primary Care Nurses. Clinical supervision is comprised of the following:
i. Perform ongoing assessment of clinical competency of the provider;
ii. Perform the role of consulting or collaborating physician in support of the clinical practice of CDU NPs;
iii. Assign clinical tasks in accordance with CAF practice privileges and provincial scopes of practice;
iv. Supervise delegated medical acts;
v. Ensure that the scope of practice, practice privileges and competency of the provider aligns with the complexity of care required for the patient;
vi. Evaluate clinical performance through direct or indirect observation, chart review, case review, provision of co-signature;
vii. Provide verbal and written feedback on clinical skills, knowledge, and judgement to the provider and Senior Medical Authority
- Other associated tasks relevant to this occupational group.
- Medical license in good standing from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC)
- Certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP)
- Have successfully completed the Canadian Forces Operational Flight Surgeon course or NATO equivalent
- Certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP)
- Be current, and maintain currency as per FSG 500-01
- 1 year of equivalent full-time experience working in a CF Health Services Centre as a primary care physician
- 5 years of experience directly providing patient medical care in one or more of the following settings: ambulatory primary care, occupational medicine, urgent care/emergency medicine
- 3 years aerospace occupational health experience (this experience may have been acquired in the 5 years of experience noted above). Aerospace occupational health is defined as working with aircrew and air operations support personnel to enhance health, promote flight safety, recognize and control hazards to health, prevent work-related illness and injury, and optimise human performance.
- Ability to obtain a government security clearance

$220 – $239 hourly
