The Unit
The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (The Centre) is a faculty development unit that works in collaboration with faculty and graduate students to provide leadership, expertise, and support in fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the University of Manitoba. The Centre contributes to the practice and scholarship of teaching through guidance, collaborative problem-solving, and research with respect to teaching and learning effectiveness, curriculum planning, and institutional policies and infrastructure to optimize the learning and teaching experiences of students and faculty.
The Position
In alignment with the University of Manitoba’s Truth and Reconciliation Framework, this position advances resources, programming, and faculty supports that strengthen the integration of Indigenous perspectives, knowledges, and pedagogies across teaching and learning at the University. The successful candidate will work across Indigenous and Western pedagogical frameworks to support faculty in translating teaching goals into meaningful learning activities, course design, and curriculum approaches aligned with Indigenous knowledges, pedagogies, and decolonizing commitments. The role includes faculty workshops, consultations, program and curriculum development, and resource creation to support Indigenization and decolonizing practices across diverse educational contexts. Strong relationship-building and collaboration across The Centre and University are essential.
Position Duties:
Curriculum design, development and delivery, and faculty support; Community building and networking; Professional development and training. This position will report to the Team Lead, Teaching Initiatives and Innovation.
Day-to-day activities include (but are not limited to):
- Build, sustain, and strengthen respectful relationships with faculty, instructors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and institutional and community partners to support the meaningful integration of Indigenous perspectives, knowledges, and pedagogies across teaching and learning contexts.
- Consult with faculty and instructors to understand their goals, questions, and teaching contexts; provide thoughtful, practical, and relationally grounded guidance on the integration of Indigenous perspectives, knowledges, and pedagogies into courses, curricula, and teaching practices.
- Provide constructive feedback on course design, curriculum development, learning activities, and teaching practices that support Indigenization and decolonizing approaches in higher education.
- Design, develop, and facilitate professional learning opportunities for faculty and instructors, including workshops, programs, and faculty development initiatives related to Indigenous pedagogies and teaching practice.
- Develop pedagogically sound and contextually responsive print and digital resources to support teaching, curriculum development, faculty development, web-based materials, and presentations.
- Contribute to and coordinate designated educational and faculty development projects, including organizing meetings, supporting project activities across team members, and producing deliverables as required.
- Contribute to and, where appropriate, lead reconciliation-related committees, working groups, and initiatives within The Centre and across the University of Manitoba.
- Work collaboratively with other teams within The Centre and across the University to support faculty development and reconciliation-related work.
- Manage responsibilities independently while maintaining collaborative, responsive, and relational ways of working with members of The Centre, other university units, and community partners.
- Remain current with established and emerging developments in teaching and learning, including Indigenous and Western pedagogical perspectives, post-secondary educational development practices, and issues relevant to Indigenization, decolonizing practice, and reconciliation in higher education.
Qualifications: Formal Education and Training
- Preference will be given to individuals who have lived Canadian Indigenous experience and extensive knowledge and experience with Indigenous cultures, communities, protocols and practices; established community relationships is an asset.
- Experience with student/faculty development, Indigenous knowledge and education, educational programming and program development is preferred.
- Preference will be given to candidates with both:
- A graduate level, degree (MA or M.Ed).
- And a B. Ed. degree.
Qualifications: Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated openness to feedback, reflection, and ongoing learning.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a team.
- Significant experience in Indigenous education in the Canadian context, including areas such as Indigenous program development, Indigenous post-secondary education, and/or Indigenous research.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous histories, contemporary issues, and Indigenous pedagogical practices relevant to higher education.
- Ability to assess faculty needs, identify opportunities for support, and take initiative in developing, recommending, and implementing responsive solutions.
- Demonstrated pedagogical knowledge, with experience in curriculum development and teaching and learning support across multiple course modalities, including online, on-campus, blended, and dual-mode environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through the preparation of project updates, presentations, and handouts.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and facilitation skills, with the ability to work effectively with faculty, instructors, colleagues, and institutional and community partners.
- Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and problem-solving in a professional and relational manner.
