The Archaeology Branch is a passionate and collaborative team within the Provincial Operations Division of the Ministry of Forests, dedicated to safeguarding British Columbia’s irreplaceable archaeological heritage. Through meaningful partnerships with First Nations and engagement with archaeologists, industry, developers, property owners, and government agencies, the Branch works to protect archaeological sites and support responsible land and resource management across the province. The Role:
As an Inventory Archaeologist, you will play a vital role in protecting British Columbia’s archaeological heritage by ensuring the integrity, accessibility, and stewardship of the Provincial Heritage Register. Your expertise will help shape how archaeological information is collected, managed, and used to support responsible land-use decisions across the province. Working closely with archaeologists, First Nations, government partners, and industry professionals, you will contribute to preserving the physical record of British Columbia’s past while helping inform decisions that impact its future. This is a unique opportunity to combine archaeological knowledge, data stewardship, collaboration, and innovation in support of heritage conservation and reconciliation while contributing to the lasting stewardship of British Columbia’s rich and diverse archaeological heritage.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology, OR
- An equivalent combination of post-graduate training and experience may be considered.
- Minimum 18 months of experience in professional archaeological resource management, specifically professional field work, site recording, and/or producing reports, site forms, and/or site maps.
Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:
- A related Master’s Degree or Doctorate.
- Two (2) or more years of experience in professional archaeological resource management.
- One (1) or more years of experience in professional archaeological resource management in British Columbia (as part of the minimum 18 months noted above).
- Experience using and/or designing complex spreadsheets, relational databases, and/or geographic information system (GIS) software.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and stakeholders in a natural resource management or cultural resource management context.
- Experience administering the Heritage Conservation Act.
- Candidates who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be performed from multiple communities and the location of the position is negotiable. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
