Summer Job Opportunity
Field Engineering Position – Geotechnical Testing, Inspection and Monitoring
Atlas Geostructural Inc.
Atlas Geostructural Inc. is seeking a motivated Civil Engineering student for a summer field position. This role is well suited for a student interested in geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, foundation systems, shoring, construction inspection, and instrumentation/monitoring.
The successful candidate will support our engineering and field teams on active construction projects involving deep foundations, excavation support systems, ground improvement, and structural/geotechnical monitoring.
Position Responsibilities
The student will assist with field and office tasks, including:
- Tieback proof testing, performance testing, and lift-off testing support.
- Helical pile and micropile load testing support.
- Pre-construction and post-construction condition surveys.
- Field inspection of shoring, deep foundation, and geotechnical construction activities.
- QA/QC documentation, including field notes, test records, photographs, and daily summaries.
- Precision monitoring using survey-based instrumentation and monitoring targets.
- Vibration and movement monitoring support, where required.
- Preparation of field reports, test logs, monitoring summaries, and inspection records.
- Coordination with engineers, contractors, and site personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have:
- Enrollment in a Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or related program.
- Interest in geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, foundations, shoring, and field inspection.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to work outdoors on construction sites.
- Ability to take clear field notes and prepare organized documentation.
- Good communication skills and a professional attitude.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle are required, as the role involves travel to construction sites.
- Previous construction or field experience is an asset but not required.
What the Student Will Learn
This position provides hands-on exposure to practical geotechnical engineering, including:
- How tiebacks, helical piles, micropiles, shoring systems, and foundation elements are tested in the field.
- How precision monitoring and precondition surveys are performed and documented.
- How field observations are translated into engineering records and reports.
- How QA/QC is applied during active construction.
