About Cando
Cando is a federally registered non-profit organization that is Indigenous-led, community-based, and membership-driven. Cando works to build and strengthen Indigenous economies by providing education, professional development, and networking opportunities for Economic Development Officers (EDOs) working in Indigenous Community Economic Development.
Position Overview
Cando is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic financial leader with strong experience in project-based accounting, funder reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and finance operations. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Finance will manage Cando’s finance function and support accurate, timely, and transparent financial reporting. As part of a small finance team, this is a hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing financial operations and directly supporting day-to-day accounting functions as required. Duties include overseeing accounts payable and receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, GST filings and related rebate claims, monthly and quarterly reporting, project and funder reporting including claims, cash flow planning, annual and project budgeting, internal financial controls, and coordinating the annual audit process.
The Director of Finance will support sound financial stewardship by ensuring Cando’s financial practices are accurate, transparent, accountable, and in compliance with applicable accounting standards and funding requirements. Through clear reporting and professional management of Cando funds, the Director will provide financial information to the Executive Director, National Board of Directors, and related Committees to support their oversight and decision-making.
Qualifications
Completion of post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field is required. A CPA designation is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of education, senior financial management experience, and relevant professional credentials may be considered. AFOA Canada certification, such as Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM), is considered an asset.
A minimum of 10 years of progressive, hands-on accounting and financial management experience is required, including at least 5 years at a senior leadership level. Required experience includes project-based accounting, funder reporting, budgeting, payroll oversight, audit coordination, internal controls, and cash flow management. Knowledge of applicable accounting standards, including Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO), is strongly preferred. Advanced proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, is required; experience with Sage 300 is considered an asset. Knowledge and experience with Indigenous peoples, communities, and culture is considered an asset.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary will be determined based on the successful candidate’s qualifications, knowledge and related experience. Health and dental benefits are available upon successful completion of the probationary period.

Relocation costs (if applicable) are the responsibility of the successful applicant. Please note this is a full-time position located in Enoch, Alberta, at the River Cree Crossing complex near the River Cree Resort & Casino.
