Community Recreation Director

Employment Type: Full-time Contract position (30-40 hours per week, including some evening and weekend work for events and programming)
Compensation: $24–$32 per hour, depending on education and experience, with opportunity for growth and advancement.

Position Overview
The Community Recreation Director is a key leadership role responsible for the planning, delivery, promotion, and administration of recreation programs, events, and facilities operated by the Blaine Lake Community Association. This position serves as the primary point of contact for community recreation services and facilities, supporting inclusive, accessible, and engaging opportunities for residents of all ages—babies, tots, children, youth, adults, and seniors.
The Director oversees communications and marketing, program development and facilitation, facility operations for the Blaine Lake Community Centre, Blaine Lake Curling Rink, and Blaine Lake Skating Rink, and coordinates volunteers, contractors, sponsors, and community partners to ensure vibrant, safe, and well-maintained community spaces.
Key Responsibilities
1. Recreation Program Planning & Delivery
· Plan, develop, schedule, and facilitate a wide range of recreation, sport, wellness, cultural, and social programs for all age groups.
· Assess community needs and interests through informal feedback, surveys, and engagement with residents and partners.
· Coordinate instructors, facilitators, volunteers, and external providers as required.
· Prepare seasonal program schedules and calendars.
· Ensure programs are inclusive, affordable, and aligned with community priorities.
· Monitor program participation, collect feedback, and adjust programming as needed.
2. Facilities Management & Operations
· Oversee day-to-day operations of the Blaine Lake Community Centre, Blaine Lake Curling Rink, and Blaine Lake Skating Rink.
· Manage facility scheduling and bookings, including rentals, leagues, practices, tournaments, and special events.
· Act as the primary contact for facility users and renters.
· Open and close facilities as required for programs, rentals, and events.
· Coordinate with hired cleaning staff to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
· Conduct regular facility walk-throughs to identify maintenance or safety issues and report concerns to the Board.
· Assist with basic setup and takedown for programs and events (tables, chairs, equipment, signage).
· Support compliance with health, safety, and risk management requirements.
3. Communications, Marketing & Social Media
· Manage all BLCA communication channels, including email, phone calls, social media platforms, updating physical signs in-community, and community postings.
· Serve as the primary public-facing contact for inquiries related to programs, events, facilities, and rentals.
· Create and distribute posters, digital graphics, and promotional materials for programs and events.
· Maintain consistent branding and clear messaging across all communication platforms.
· Promote programs, events, and facility availability through social media, newsletters, posters, and community networks.
· Update calendars, schedules, and program information in a timely manner.
4. Event Planning & Community Engagement
· Plan, coordinate, and support community events, tournaments, fundraisers, and special activities.
· Recruit, schedule, and coordinate volunteers for events, bar shifts, and canteen shifts.
· Provide on-site coordination during events to ensure smooth operations.
· Foster positive relationships with community members, user groups, local organizations, and partners.
· Encourage volunteer involvement and recognize volunteer contributions.
5. Sponsorship, Advertising & Revenue Generation
· Identify and pursue sponsorship and advertising opportunities to support programs and facilities.
· Coordinate advertising placements within facilities (e.g., rink boards, signage, event sponsorships).
· Maintain relationships with local businesses, sponsors, and advertisers.
· Track sponsorship agreements and ensure sponsor recognition obligations are met.
6. Administration, Financial Management & Reporting
· Maintain accurate records related to programs, facility bookings, volunteers, contracts, and sponsorships.
· Develop and manage annual operating budgets in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
· Track revenues and expenses related to programs, facility rentals, sponsorships, advertising, and events.
· Prepare and maintain up-to-date monthly financial statements and summaries for review by the Board.
· Support invoicing, payment tracking, and basic financial reconciliation.
· Prepare regular operational and financial reports, summaries, and recommendations for the BLCA Board of Directors.
· Develop and support policies, procedures, and schedules related to recreation programming, financial management, and facility use, in collaboration with the Board.
7. Grant Writing & Fundraising
· Research, identify, and pursue grant opportunities that support recreation programs, facilities, capital improvements, and community initiatives.
· Prepare, submit, and manage grant applications, including budgets, work plans, and supporting documentation.
· Track grant deadlines, reporting requirements, and compliance obligations.
· Prepare interim and final grant reports as required by funders.
· Plan and support fundraising initiatives, special events, and campaigns in collaboration with the Board and volunteers.
· Coordinate donor, sponsor, and funder recognition activities.
· Maintain records related to grants, fundraising revenues, and reporting.
8. Leadership & Collaboration
· Work collaboratively with the BLCA Board of Directors to implement strategic priorities.
· Represent the Association in a professional, positive, and community-oriented manner.
· Support a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment in all programs and facilities.
· Respond to concerns or conflicts professionally and in a timely manner.
Qualifications & Skills
· Post-secondary education or relevant experience in recreation management, community development, event planning, or a related field.
· Experience planning and delivering recreation or community programs.
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and schedules.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Experience with social media management, basic graphic design, and promotional materials.
· Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
· Experience with facility operations, bookings, or volunteer coordination is an asset.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with people of all ages.
· Proficiency with basic office software and online scheduling/communication tools.
Working Conditions
· Flexible hours (30-40 hours per week), including evenings and weekends, depending on programs and events.
· Combination of office-based work and on-site presence at facilities and events.
· Office space will be available for the Community Rec Director at the Blaine Lake Community Centre – 109 Railway Avenue W, Blaine Lake, SK.
· Physical tasks may include lifting light equipment, setting up rooms, and being on your feet during events.
Additional Duties
· Other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the Blaine Lake Community Association.
