The Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council (NSCSC) has an immediate opening for a friendly, task-oriented Accountant with great organizational skills and an unparalleled attention to detail. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Accountant will be responsible for full cycle accounting including management of day-to-day activities as well as analyzing and preparing financial documentation as required for monthly, annual and project reporting purposes.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
In this role, the Accountant will be responsible for:
· All aspects of financial reporting including the accurate and timely processing of accounts;
· Maintaining financial records;
· Gathering and compiling information to support the preparation of budgets and proposals;
· Preparing bank deposits, journal entry postings and statements;
· Liaising with the management team on budgets and forecasts;
· Preparing financial plans, accountability reports, claims, forecasts and budgets;
· Completing and/or facilitating submissions to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA);
· Preparing reports and financial statements as required for meetings, presentations, proposals and claims;
· Assembling year-end documentation and assisting auditors with the preparation of audited financial statements;
· Administering and maintaining banking relationships;
· Participating in the development of accounting processes and procedures;
· Provide assistance and support to industry partners in areas related to financial management as requested; and,
· Other duties as required to support the operation of the NSCSC.
Skills/Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal attributes:
· Bachelors’ degree in a related discipline (for example, Accounting, Business, Finance, etc.) and/or equivalent experience
· Accounting designation or pursuing designation
· Demonstrated experience in managing all aspects of regular financial reporting
· Strong analytical skills with a knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles including generally accepted accounting principles
· Accounting experience within a not-for-profit organization would be considered an asset
· Experience with or knowledge of the construction industry would be considered an asset
· Must have a high level of professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality
· Excellent knowledge of Sage 50 Premium
· Proficiency with Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
· Experience in budgeting, forecasting and monthly financial reporting
· Ability to work proactively, cooperatively, and collectively with fellow employees, management, and Board of Directors
· Outstanding communication skills (written and verbal)
· Flexibility to adapt to changes in project requirements, scheduling, and deliverables
· The ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
Work Environment
Primarily a busy small office environment located in Halifax, NS
Hours of Work
Full-time – Typically 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (Monday to Friday)
Occasional overnight travel and some evening or weekend work may be required
