Yard Driver / Shunt Driver – Day, Afternoon & Weekend Shifts
Overview
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Yard Driver / Shunt Driver to join our operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely moving trailers throughout the yard, positioning trailers at dock doors, and supporting warehouse operations with forklift duties as required. This role is critical in maintaining efficient freight flow and ensuring smooth daily operations in a fast-paced transportation and logistics environment.
The ideal candidate will have experience with trailer shunting, connecting and disconnecting trailers, forklift operation, and maintaining a strong focus on safety, communication, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely shunt and position trailers from the yard to dock doors and return empty trailers to designated yard locations
- Perform trailer hook-ups and disconnects, including inspection of airlines, electrical connections, and trailer securement
- Conduct routine yard checks and monitor trailer inventory and locations
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment to assist with freight movement when required
- Load and unload freight safely and efficiently
- Complete daily equipment inspections and report any mechanical or safety concerns immediately
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe yard conditions at all times
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, warehouse staff, drivers, and supervisors regarding trailer movements and operational needs
- Follow all company safety procedures, yard policies, and transportation regulations
- Assist with minor equipment troubleshooting and basic maintenance support when necessary
- Support warehouse and cross-dock operations during busy periods as required
Qualifications & Requirements
- Previous experience as a Yard Driver, Shunt Driver, or similar transportation role preferred
- Experience operating forklifts and material handling equipment required
- Strong trailer backing and maneuvering skills in tight yard environments
- Experience connecting and disconnecting trailers safely
- Class 1 or Class 3 License considered an asset but not mandatory depending on experience
- Basic mechanical and maintenance knowledge considered an asset
- Strong understanding of freight handling and yard safety procedures
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Physically capable of lifting, climbing, bending, and performing yard-related duties
