Group Underground is a division of Group Electrical Contractors which is a growing electrical and underground utility contractor specializing in underground power, communications, and fiber optic infrastructure. We are looking for an experienced Directional Driller/Locator to join our team. This position is ideal for someone who is safety-focused, motivated, and experienced in operating horizontal directional drilling equipment and utility locating systems.
Responsibilities
- Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Locate drill heads using electronic locating equipment to ensure accurate bore paths.
- Read and interpret utility locates, construction drawings, and site plans.
- Install underground conduit, fiber optic cable, electrical duct banks, and utility services.
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance.
- Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and company procedures.
- Complete job documentation and communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members.
- Assist with site preparation, restoration, and general labour duties as required.
- Maintain a clean and organized worksite.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating horizontal directional drilling equipment.
- Experience using DigiTrak or similar locating systems.
- Ability to read utility locates and construction plans.
- Valid driver’s licence (Class 1 or Class 3 with air endorsement is considered an asset).
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction practices.
- Experience working around existing underground infrastructure.
- Physically capable of working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to safe work practices.
Assets
- Experience installing fiber optic infrastructure.
- Experience with electrical or telecommunications construction.
- First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Ground Disturbance Level II Certification.
- WHMIS Certification.
- Heavy equipment experience (excavator, skid steer, loader, etc.).
