The King’s Students’ Union (KSU) represents about 1000 students on King’s campus in Halifax. The Union offers services to its membership, runs two businesses, administers a Health and Dental plan, runs campaigns and represents students within university administration structures.
As the collective voice of King’s students on campus, the KSU provides advocacy and representation through its Executive and Councillors. The KSU believes in accessible education and is committed to fighting for an equitable society. In addition to advocating for students’ rights and supporting causes in our community, the KSU supports societies and events that help build the King’s community and organizes one of the last fully student-run Orientation weeks in Canada.
Being a member of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), the KSU provides services including free sexual and menstrual health products, our Health and Dental plan, Orientation week materials and handbooks.
The KSU is looking for an approachable, organized, and self-motivated in-office staff person to act as the first point of contact between students and the services of their Union. The Services and Campaigns Coordinator (SCC) supports office management and administers the student health and dental plan. In addition, the SCC provides general support to the Union’s student executive team with campaigns and strategic advising.
The Services and Campaigns Coordinator is supervised by the KSU President. The SCC also interacts daily with other Executive members, members of the Council of Students, students, their parents and staff members of the university.
Responsibilities (not limited to):
HEALTH AND DENTAL PLAN ADMINISTRATION
- Administering a health plan of roughly 750 students
- Assisting members with filing claims and providing accurate and timely answers
- Providing information on the plan’s benefits, cost, and opt-out and claims processes
- Conducting all data entry associated with the health plan and working with Green Shield Canada staff to ensure data is uploaded in an accurate and timely manner
OFFICE MANAGEMENT AND RECEPTION
- Ordering, storing and organizing office supplies for the KSU office
- Communicating with KSU members and visitors in person, online and on the phone
- Assisting student societies with printing, photocopying and occasionally the organization of society events
GENERAL EXECUTIVE AND COUNCIL SUPPORT
- Acting as a sounding board and support to executive members on issues including internal and external committee work, union and college governance, implementation of campaigns, equity issues, union financial controls and processes, political strategy, event organizing and student life
- Facilitate changeover and the maintenance of consistent changeover documents
- Supporting executive members with media interviews and speaking in public including participating in the development of messaging and conducting pre-interview media prep
- Assisting with communication with the KSU’s bookkeeper and accountant
- Assisting with scheduling
- Assisting with website and social media management
PROVISION OF OTHER SERVICES
- Overseeing the purchasing of union materials, particularly orientation week items and sexual health products
- Providing support for the planning and implementation of KSU’s student-run Orientation Week as needed including but not limited to assisting with event planning and setup, scheduling, training, fundraising, scheduling, and acquisition of proper permits
Compensation:
The position’s salary is $26/hour with an expectation of part-time employment at 21 hrs/week or less. The chosen candidate will work three days per week in office between the hours of 9am and 4pm, and the days themselves can be flexible. Benefits include enrollment in a health and dental plan, 14 days paid vacation, and 5 paid sick days (plus additional time as approved by their supervisor, the President). The KSU will also provide the SCC with a monthly allowance to offset cellular and data costs.
Possibility for overtime hours at the beginning of September and beginning of January, and potentially other busy times.
This is a contract position with a one-year contract with review and potential renewal.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualities, skills, and/or experience:
- Strong commitment to the values of the King’s Students’ Union and to student political organizing

- Experience with anti-oppressive frameworks
- Working knowledge of health plans
- Knowledge and experience within student movements and understanding of the current context of post-secondary education (or strong willingness to learn)
- Good communication skills in-person, over email and over the phone
- Basic knowledge of social media
- Political campaign experience and knowledge of university governance an asset
- Office management experience an asset
What candidates should know:
- The primary responsibility of this position is health plan administration and communication with students about the health plan, but this work should take up about a third of the employee’s time in office.
- The chosen candidate will be expected to take direction from the Council of Students and Executive Committee, while providing advice based on their relevant experience.
- Busy times of year for the Union are September, when Orientation Week and the health plan opt-out period take place, and January, at the beginning of the Winter term. Calmer periods include late December and April to August when fewer students are on campus.
