Purpose of the Role
Cambridge Treats is seeking a detail-oriented Research & Development (R&D) Technician to support the development, improvement, and commercialization of pet food and treat products. This role will assist with product formulation, laboratory testing, ingredient evaluations, production trials, and technical documentation while ensuring all activities meet food safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with R&D, Production, Quality Assurance, Procurement, and Operations teams to support innovation, product improvements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Food Safety & Quality Responsibilities
The R&D Technician plays an important role in supporting Cambridge Treats’ commitment to producing safe, compliant, and high-quality pet food products. Responsibilities include following and promoting all Food Safety, Quality, GMP, HACCP, BRCGS, sanitation, and Health & Safety requirements.
The role requires maintaining accurate documentation, following established procedures, preventing contamination, identifying and reporting quality or food safety concerns, and actively participating in food safety training and improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Support product development activities, including formulation trials, sample preparation, ingredient evaluations, and product testing.
- Conduct laboratory testing and product evaluations according to established procedures, specifications, and protocols.
- Prepare samples, prototypes, and trial materials for laboratory assessments and manufacturing trials.
- Support production trials by collecting samples, recording observations, and documenting results.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records, project files, testing documentation, and technical reports.
- Follow formulations, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and testing protocols with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Operate laboratory equipment, perform calibration checks, and complete routine maintenance activities as required.
- Collect, organize, analyze, and summarize testing data to support product evaluations and improvement projects.
- Identify and communicate product, process, and quality concerns to the appropriate teams.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to products, processes, and operations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Production, Quality Assurance, Procurement, and Operations.
- Ensure compliance with food safety programs, GMP, HACCP, BRCGS, sanitation requirements, and Health & Safety policies.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Animal Nutrition, Chemistry, Biology, Food Technology, or a related scientific discipline.
- 1–3 years of experience in a laboratory, research and development, food manufacturing, or pet food manufacturing environment preferred.
- Hands-on laboratory experience with product testing, sample preparation, and equipment operation.
- Experience supporting product development projects or manufacturing trials is an asset.
- Knowledge of GMPs, HACCP, BRCGS, and food safety systems is an asset.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 kg (55 lbs.).
- Ability to work in office, laboratory, and manufacturing environments.
- Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Exposure to ingredients, dust, allergens, noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures typical of a pet food manufacturing facility.
- Occasional flexibility in working hours may be required to support production trials and manufacturing activities.
