Position Overview
A Wescan Safety Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment on-site and at our facilities. This position ensures that all site activities are conducted in compliance with federal, provincial, and company-specific safety regulations, policies, and procedures. The Safety Officer will be responsible to ensure hazard identification and documentation, implement incident prevention, conduct training and orientation, and other aspects of safety culture development.
The successful candidate will work directly under the Safety Division Manager at the specified work place on a daily basis. This role requires the candidate to be an effective and clear communicator who can easily adapt to changing priorities, be highly computer literate, and be prepared to conduct orientations, training and field level audits and inspections.
Responsibilities
- Enforce the company’s safety program, ensuring alignment with applicable regulations (e.g., Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act & Regulations, COR (CSAM) and Client specific safety programs)
- Conduct formal and informal safety inspections and audits to identify risks and ensure corrective actions are taken promptly and documenting each stage. Frequency will be determined by the need of sites and facilities respectively.
- Lead site-specific and facility specific safety orientations and conduct toolbox talks for all workers, subcontractors, and visitors to either location.
- Monitor and document the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection, and other control measures. Inspect and ensure equipment is ready to perform, removing any from circulation that are not, and requesting/tracking repair and replacement.
- Generate training documentation and conduct training per internal program or CSA standard for staff.
- Maintain all required site specific safety documentation including hazard assessments, incident reports, safety meeting minutes, and inspection records.
- Generate Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), and site-specific safety plans for each project.
- Investigate and report all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions; recommend and follow up on corrective actions.
- Coordinate emergency response plans and participate in drills and training exercises.
- Liaise with field personnel, subcontractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure safety requirements are communicated and followed.
- Promote a strong safety culture by modeling best practices and recognizing safe behavior on site.
- Stay current with industry safety trends, legislative updates, and best practices.
Qualifications
- Certification in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Safety Officer (CSO), or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation required or demonstrated equivalent.
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant safety experience at active construction sites in Canada, preferably in industrial or commercial projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal and provincial construction safety legislation and standards.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation techniques, and root cause analysis.
- First Aid/CPR, WHMIS 2015, Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry, and other relevant safety certifications an asset.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence positive safety behaviors. Position requires presentation/speaking to large groups of people.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, digital safety reporting tools (e.g., SiteDocs, OneLife, Corfix, etc.), and familiarity with documentation sharing applications (Sharepoint, One Drive).
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to jobsites using personal vehicle.

Pay: $55,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
