The City of Terrace is in search of a highly skilled and organized individual to be the FireSmart Coordinator. The FireSmart Coordinator supports wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation through public education, assessments, and mitigative work to reduce community risk from wildfires.This is a grant-funded, temporary position with the potential for extension, subject to the approval of continued grant funding.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Act as the main point of contact for the City of Terrace FireSmart Program.

Coordinate public education work being completed through the Community Resiliency Investment (CRI).

Organize/participate in Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, emergency preparedness fairs, community meals, farmer's markets, local sporting events, school presentations, and trade shows to distribute FireSmart information.

Facilitate FireSmart education sessions.

Create internal, external, and public communications related to FireSmart activities.

Act as project lead for Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) development and liaison between the community and any consultants.

Ensure City of Terrace adheres to the FireSmart Marks Usage and FireSmart Brand Guidelines.

Provide direction and assistance to implement FireSmart principles on private and community land areas.

Coordinate FireSmart Assessments within the City of Terrace area.

Facilitate FireSmart 101 sessions.

Coordinate the implementation of the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program.

Create or collaborate with a FireSmart working group, Community FireSmart Committee, and Resiliency Committee within the City of Terrace and host monthly conference calls.

Coordinates the implementation of the FireSmart Canada Neighborhood Recognition Program.

Recruits motivated community leaders that can be mentored to work with self-organized groups of citizens as they plan and implement wildfire mitigations in their own neighborhoods.

Collaborates and coordinates with other BC FireSmart Committee member agencies (BC Wildfire Service, fire departments, First Nations, BC Parks, etc.) in the area.

Supports Fire Protection Services and Emergency Operations Centre during activations.
- Ability to take in-house training and certification as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to deal tactfully with elected officials, co-workers, community representatives and the public.

Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).

Demonstrate written and oral communication skills including presentation and public speaking.

Work effectively and cooperatively within a diverse team to achieve group and organizational goals.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
- Ability and willingness to navigate Fire Smart website and Fire Smart requirements.

Ability to effectively deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Two years related leadership experience including supervisory, facilitation, and contract management experience.

Experience with public safety education and/or emergency preparedness programs.

Completion of FireSmart 101 and Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR).

Local FireSmart Representative qualification or willingness to attain.

Experience in Local Government.

Knowledge of fire prevention, FireSmart, and emergency preparedness programs.
- Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for community engagement and education.
- Experience with FireSmart and Wildfire Mitigation work.
- Completion of cultural sensitivity training.

Prior wildfire experience and construction/renovation experience an asset.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid Class 5 BC driver's licence.
- Satisfactory drivers abstract.
- A satisfactory completion of a Criminal Record Check and vulnerable sector check.
