Primary Purpose: The Legal Assistant is responsible to perform a variety of tasks to enhance their assigned lawyer’s effectiveness.
Nature of Work: A Legal Assistant directly reports to their assigned lawyer for the workload assignments and to the Office Manager for all other matters. This position works closely with all staff and lawyers in both the Saskatoon and Regina offices. The work is both legal assistance and administrative support in nature and includes maintaining and organizing files and drafting and filing documents. The incumbent needs to have the ability to adapt to shifting priorities, respond in a timely and appropriate manner for task completion and balance between legal and administrative support.
Accountabilities: A Legal Assistant is responsible for organized day to day file management; completing dictation involving drafting and filing legal documents to clients and other law firms; manage lawyer’s diary; manage lawyer’s schedules and meetings; collecting information from clients; time and disbursement entry; preparation of invoices and expense reports; stay current with knowledge and legal rules of procedure to ensure compliance; providing back-up coverage in the absence of other legal assistant’s.
Qualifications
Experience:
- at least 5 years experience in a legal environment in an administrative capacity with demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- experience in an automated environment
- knowledge of legal terminology and familiarity with legal documents
- Experience and understanding of:
- Information Services Corporation
- Understanding of corporate / commercial law and real estate
- Due diligence
Skills:
- Excellent proofreading skills, attention to detail, time management skills with the ability to multi-task and work well under pressure
- The ability to work independently, problem solve, follow instructions with minimal supervision, and take initiative
- Willingness to learn and contribute to the team
- Proficiency using Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat
