Position Summary
The Safety Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe, healthy, and compliant workplace across all company operations. This role ensures compliance with federal, provincial, and industry regulations while fostering a strong culture of safety. The Safety Officer works closely with management, drivers, and employees to reduce workplace incidents, investigate accidents, implement preventative measures, and ensure all safety programs are effectively maintained. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in transportation safety regulations, highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to make sound decisions in fast-paced environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization.
- Minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and occupational health risks.
- Develop, implement, and maintain company health and safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal health and safety legislation.
- Ensure compliance with MTO, DOT, CVOR, NSC, FAST, and CTPAT requirements.
- Conduct workplace, yard, vehicle, and equipment safety inspections.
- Coordinate and maintain maintenance and safety inspection records.
- Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, near misses, and injuries, and recommend corrective actions.
- Prepare accident investigation reports and assist with insurance and regulatory investigations.
- Monitor and maintain the company's CVOR rating and implement strategies for continuous improvement.
- Develop and administer driver safety and incentive programs that encourage safe driving practices.
- Deliver safety orientation and ongoing training for new and existing employees.
- Ensure employees possess the required permits, licenses, certifications, and training to perform their duties safely.
- Monitor employee compliance with company safety policies and applicable regulations.
- Identify workplace hazards and recommend preventative and corrective measures.
- Maintain fuel card programs and coordinate IFTA reporting.
- Manage the onboarding and offboarding of company equipment.
- Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and compliance documentation.
- Work collaboratively with management to continuously improve company safety performance.
- Stay current on changes to transportation and occupational health and safety legislation.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the Safety Department and overall business operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Transportation, Business, or a related field preferred.
- Transportation safety certification is considered an asset.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a safety role, preferably within the transportation or logistics industry.
- Strong knowledge of:
- MTO and DOT regulations
- Commercial vehicle safety requirements
- Occupational Health & Safety legislation
- CVOR compliance
- FAST and CTPAT programs
- IFTA reporting
- Experience developing and implementing safety programs and policies.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and transportation management, dispatch, and tracking systems.
- Strong data entry and documentation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's license.

Working Conditions
- Combination of office, yard, and field work.
- Occasional travel to terminals or customer locations may be required.
- May occasionally work outside regular business hours to respond to incidents, emergencies, or operational requirements.
Pay: $50,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
