The Role: As our Yard Manager, you are the heartbeat of our on-site operations. You will be responsible for leading staff, coordinating logistics, and ensuring the safe operation of equipment. We need a leader who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and lead by example - someone who can seamlessly transition from entering lot descriptions on a computer, to helping a customer troubleshoot an issue, to hopping in a skid steer to unload items in changing weather conditions.
The auction business moves fast, and our yard does too. We are looking for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment but has the patience and communication skills to guide a team, foster autonomy, and ensure safety is never compromised.
What You Will Do:
Leadership & Operations
- Lead by Doing: Embody a "whatever it takes" mentality, balancing computer work, customer interaction, and physical yard work (loading/unloading items).
- Drive the Daily Plan: Conduct daily morning meetings to ensure staff are clear on objectives, goals, and tasks for the day.
- Coordinate the Yard: Supervise all yard activities, including lot shipping, receiving, organization, picturing, and lot descriptions.
- Optimize Flow: Effectively sequence items according to company processes and implement improvements to enhance overall operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with Sales: Coordinate with the sales team to ensure smooth handling when high-value shipments are expected to arrive.
Customer Service & Communication
- Be the Face of the Company: Deliver outstanding customer service, interacting with buyers and sellers regularly.
- Problem-Solve with Patience: Handle the inevitable hiccups of auction day and resolve customer or logistical issues on the fly with a calm, professional demeanor.
- Communicate Effectively: Clearly detail expectations to your team while supporting their autonomy and initiative.
Equipment & Safety
- Operate Heavy Equipment: Operate and oversee the use of skid steers, telehandlers, and other yard equipment as needed.
- Prioritize Safety: Ensure strict compliance with safety regulations, maintain a secure working environment, and manage safety materials and processes.
- Maintain the Fleet: Manage equipment maintenance records and yard supplies to ensure everything is in top working order.
What We Are Looking For:
- Equipment Expertise: Hands-on ability to operate skid steers, telehandlers, and various power and hand tools.
- Industry Knowledge: Solid understanding of a wide variety of equipment, including construction machinery, agriculture equipment, vehicles, and tools.
- Administrative & Tech Skills: Competent in using Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Spreadsheets) with strong data entry and proofreading skills for entering lot descriptions into our auction software.
- Leadership Style: Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team effectively.
- Flexibility & Stamina: A readiness to work in a dynamic environment where every day is different.
The Schedule & Environment:
Candidates should understand the cyclical nature of the auction business. Weeks leading up to sales will be highly demanding and fast-paced, while the weeks following load-out grant a chance to catch up and reorganize.
Please note: Weekend availability is required following sales days.
