Position: Full Time Community Supported Independent Living (SIL) Direct Support Professional
Mary Centre is currently seeking one (1) person to fill a Supported Independent Living (SIL) Direct Support Professional position. The Direct Support Professional will provide support to adults with a development disability to live independently in their community according to the mission, values and principles of Mary Centre.
Location: Brampton
Reports To: Service Coordinator
Working Conditions: Forty (40) Flexible hours per week based on program needs, which includes days, afternoons, weekends, occasional overnight awake as needed, and holidays.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Social Work Degree, or Social Service Worker, Vocational Rehabilitation Worker, Developmental Service Worker Diploma and a minimum two (2) years related Community experience in the field of developmental disabilities and dual diagnosis. Ability to teach life skills and work with minimal supervision. Minimum of working one (1) year with children as well.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Possess a Valid Ontario Driver’s License class G and have access to a reliable vehicle
- Mandatory Trainings are up to date
- Computer Skills – Microsoft Word and Excel
- Ability to teach life skills and work with minimal supervision
Key Responsibilities:
- Be familiar with and consistently apply the principles of Mary Centre with respect to the Mission, Values and Policies and Procedures
- To maintain a case load as designated by the Director of Services/Program Coordinator, providing support guidance and education to each person ensuring ample opportunity for maximum independence in all areas of life.
- To support the people to self-determine their life plan and build self-esteem through positive connections in the community.
- Supporting people to access educational, vocational, volunteer and day programs, determining the person’s level of need and support required achieving intended goal.
- To advocate on behalf of the person’s right to individualized community participation by consulting with outside professionals when necessary.
- To encourage the ongoing communication and liaison between person supported and their related programs, families, and friends in a positive and professional manner.
- To ensure full membership in the community through programs supportive of person’s medical, emotional, social, and recreational needs, as well as religious and cultural beliefs.
- To develop support networks based on the person’s current connections and develop extensive support from church, community and volunteer base.
- Helping people to become involved in employment of their choiceby providing the support required to ensure all areas of need are addressed to successfully achieve and maintain their goal.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and writing skills.
- Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills
- Professionalism, exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information.
- Must be able to function as part of a multidisciplinary team, share information in a respectful and nonjudgmental manner.
- Knowledge of how to implement and follow Behavior Support Plans. Provide appropriate professional understanding and intervention in response to emotional, behavioral, and physical needs of people.
- Knowledge of Passport Funding
- Knowledge of Individual Support Plans, how to write a plan and help a person achieve their goals.
- Experience and ability to interact with families and community partners.
- Ability to keep work environment up to Health and Safety Standards
- French language skills will be considered an asset.
Starting Salary: $27.47 per hour
