Role Overview
As we expand our operations, we are seeking an experienced Lead Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) to join our practice! The Lead MDRT plays a critical role in ensuring the highest standard of patient safety by overseeing the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and storage of surgical instruments and medical devices. They will operate autoclaves and specialized cleaning equipment while strictly adhering to infection prevention and control protocols.
Beyond the reprocessing duties, this position will also leverage seasoned expertise and leadership skills. The Lead MDRT will play a pivotal role to support Windflower’s growth by assisting in the setup, workflow design and implementation of new MDR departments for accreditation in other clinics within the Windflower Health group.
Key Responsibilities:
- Medical device reprocessing: Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, sterilize, and store reusable surgical instruments and medical devices according to strict quality systems and one-way workflows.
- Equipment operation: Safely operate and maintain autoclaves, high-level disinfection equipment, and specialized cleaning tools.
- Leadership and department setup: Provide supervisory support and expert guidance to assist in designing, planning, and setting up a compliant MDR department at a sister clinic within the group.
- Quality assurance and safety: Monitor, document, and adhere to all infection prevention and control (IP&C) protocols, Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards, and WHMIS guidelines.
- Orientation and mentorship: Assist in providing site-based orientation, on-the-job training, and routine competency reviews for newly hired reprocessing staff.
- Compliance and documentation: Maintain meticulous records for sterilization cycles, maintenance logs, and site-specific documentation, ensuring readiness for annual reviews and mock safety drills.
Required Education & Certifications:
Mandatory Alberta Certification: Must hold and maintain at least one of the following recognized professional certifications:
- CMDRT certification from the CSA Group; or
- CRCST, CIS, CER or CHL certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA)
Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent, and successful completion of a recognized MDR education program that included a practical component and comprehensive coursework related to but not limited to:

Professional Experience & Other Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of demonstrated, hands-on experience as an MDR Technician operating in a fast-paced surgical or clinical environment, with at least 1 year of experience in a leadership or senior capacity
- Previous experience with MDR department and workflow setup in a public or private setting
- Proven ability to effectively orient, train, and assess the competency skills of clinical peers
- Up-to-date immunization record, specifically including Hepatitis B and the annual influenza vaccine
- Commitment to managing personal continuing education credits required for mandatory recertification
- Successful completion of all Windflower Surgical orientation protocols and practical return-demonstrations of practice
