Overview:
The Education Coach supports OIB and nominal roll students and their families by working collaboratively with schools, administrators, community programs, and partners under the Local Education Agreement (LEA). The position ensures that structures, communication pathways, and supports are in place to promote student well‑being, academic success, and family engagement. The role enhances access to information, services, and resources needed for students to succeed in the education system and beyond. This position reports to the Director of Education for the Osoyoos Indian Band.
The ideal candidate is trauma‑informed, culturally grounded, and an exceptional relationship‑builder who communicates effectively, stays organized and self‑regulated, works confidently with First Nations learners, manages data and reporting with ease, adapts well to busy or noisy environments, and remains flexible in a dynamic education setting.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Student Support & Advocacy
- Focus on the learning, cultural, and social‑emotional needs of all OIB and nominal roll students.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with students, families, and school staff.
- Advocate for students and families to ensure their needs are understood and supported within the school system.
- Support students in setting academic and personal goals and help them work toward achieving them.
- Promote student well‑being and learning through four key principles: agency, caring relationships, high expectations, and power sharing.
Learner Profiles & Planning
- Review, update, and maintain Learner Profiles for all OIB and nominal roll students.
- Ensure families, school staff, and support teams have current information on each student’s learning needs.
- Participate in the development and monitoring of student learning plans, transition plans, and support strategies.
Communication & Coordination
- Bridge communication between home, school, and OIB through phone calls, meetings, home visits, and regular updates.
- Organize and attend parent–school–student meetings, including transition meetings and case conferences.
- Coordinate student transportation for tutoring, meetings, extracurricular activities, and other school‑related needs.
Program Delivery & Student Services
- Support and deliver tutoring programs, working with students individually and in group settings.
- Plan, implement, and run educational summer programs such as post‑secondary readiness workshops and summer learning camps.
- Connect students with OIB resources such as the Resource Centre, counselling, housing supports, tutoring, and other services.
Community & Partnership Engagement
- Attend internal and external education meetings, including IEC, FNESC, syilx education committee, tripartite meetings, and others, with or on behalf of the Education Director.
- Participate in planning and hosting community education events such as the year‑end grad dinner, back‑to‑school events, career fairs, and parent information sessions.
LEA Implementation & Administration
- Contribute to the implementation, monitoring, and management of the Local Education Agreement (LEA).
- Support administrative tasks, reporting, and data management related to student services and education programs.
Other Responsibilities
- Provide emergency availability as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or Post‑secondary Diploma or Certificate in Human Services, Indigenous Community Support Work, Education Assistant, or a related field.
- A combination of relevant education and work experience may be considered.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (recommended).
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector) required.
- ICF BC certification (considered an asset).
Experience
- Minimum two years of experience in a related field.
- Experience supporting students, particularly First Nations learners and communities.
- Experience working with confidential information and maintaining professional boundaries.
- Experience supporting neurodivergent students (e.g., ADHD, ASD, learning differences).
- Teaching experience (considered an asset).
Competencies
- Strong knowledge of K–12 and post‑secondary education systems.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage multiple priorities.
- Cultural awareness, cultural safety, and sensitivity to Indigenous contexts.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Active listening and relationship‑building skills.
- Event planning, facilitation, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer literacy.
- Ability to exercise diplomacy, confidentiality, discretion, and tact.
This is a full‑time, year‑round position, scheduled for five days per week (40 hours), with occasional evenings and weekends as required. Screening will be based on applications received, and references will be requested from shortlisted candidates. The pay range for this role is $58,000 to $63,000 annually.
