Position:
Reporting to the Employment & Training Supervisor, the Employment Consultant is responsible for supporting Walpole Island First Nation members in achieving employment readiness, career development, and sustainable employment outcomes.
This role provides individualized, client-centred employment services, including assessment, career planning, job search support, and placement coordination. The Employment Consultant works closely with community partners, employers, and service providers to address barriers to employment and connect clients with meaningful training and job opportunities, in alignment with program goals and WIFN values.
Requirements:
Education
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Career and Work Counselling, Social Services, Human Services, or a related field is required
- An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in employment counselling, career development, or a related client-focused role.
- Experience in case management, client assessments, and employment placement support.
- Experience working with First Nations communities and an understanding of cultural perspectives is considered an asset.
- Experience in proposal writing and reporting is considered an asset.
Other Requirements
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Criminal Record Judicial Matters Check.
Responsibilities:
Client Assessment and Career Planning
- Conduct comprehensive client assessments to evaluate skills, education, experience, interests, and employment readiness.
- Identify barriers to employment and develop individualized action plans to support client success.
- Administer and interpret career and aptitude assessments to guide career exploration.
- Provide ongoing career counselling and support to help clients set and achieve employment goals.
Employment Readiness and Client Support
- Deliver job readiness supports, including resume development, interview preparation, and job search strategies.
- Provide one-on-one coaching to build confidence, motivation, and workplace skills.
- Assist clients in accessing supports such as training programs, financial assistance, or external services.
- Refer clients to appropriate internal and external programs, including education, rehabilitation, and social services.
Program Delivery and Workshops
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate workshops focused on employment readiness, life skills, and career development.
- Support clients in preparing for and maintaining employment placements.
- Monitor client progress and provide follow-up support to ensure successful outcomes.
Employer and Partnership Development
- Build and maintain relationships with employers, industry representatives, and community partners.
- Liaise with employers to identify job opportunities and support client placements.
- Promote Employment and Training programs and services within the community and externally.
- Collaborate with agencies and organizations to enhance service delivery and address gaps in support.
Labour Market and Program Support
- Research and provide current labour market information to clients and staff.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, documentation, and case notes.
- Assist with reporting requirements, including data collection and program outcomes.
- Support proposal development and reporting as required.
