Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. This role is an in‑office position based at our [20 Bay St] location. Our team is highly collaborative, and much of our work benefits from in‑person co‑creation, relationship‑building, and hands‑on partnership with leaders across the organization.
Our Capital Cost Accounting Office is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst to prepare and review the corporate accounting for capital projects and to ensure enterprise level finance controls for an assigned portfolio of capital projects to deliver timely and accurate financial information for reporting and audit purposes. This role will also ensure capital cost accounting compliance with Public Sector Accounting Standards, corporate finance policies, and improves processes through continuous business improvement plans (BIPs) and LEAN initiatives.
What will I be doing?
- Provides capital financial reporting (e.g., project level analysis and reconciliation of accounts), prepares adjusting entries at Corporate level, and monitors compliance with accounting standards and policies, taking corrective action as needed.
- Coordinates construction in progress reviews with business units and finance teams to determine appropriate accounting for impairments, write-offs, disposals, capitalization, and amortization.
- Conducts financial analyses in support of the business operations in the assigned capital project portfolio, using proper accounting treatment; provides subject matter expertise in analyzing and responding to inquiries from business partners and solving complex problems.
- Provides internal customers, leaders, and team members, with agreed upon reports and recommendations with accuracy and on time.
- Provides subject matter expertise on capital accounting to support other business units and activities (e.g., auditors, project managers).
- Develops commentary and presentations on financial analysis and reports for senior management and presents them to aid decision-making.
- Establishes and maintains procedures and processes within the department consistent with company policy and good business practices.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Completion of a degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Commerce, or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
- Demonstrated progressive experience in accounting, reporting and/or financial analysis, preferably within a transit environment, capital-intensive industry, or the public sector.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is an asset.
- Experience preparing and reviewing month-end, quarter-end and year-end accounting entries and reporting for capital assets; as well as providing supporting documentation and liaising with external and internal auditors.
- Knowledge of business practices, financial analysis, and reporting; understands the financial and accounting impact of business processes to evaluate current and future business activities (e.g., audit, and reporting requirements).
- Advanced experience with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proficiency in accounting in a large financial application and proficiency in Oracle Fixed Assets and Project Costing Systems would be an asset.
- Knowledge of public sector accounting standards or comparable accounting standards.
- Interpersonal and oral/written communication skills to work collaboratively with business partners, as well as develop and present commentary, reports, and presentations on financial analysis to senior management to aid decision-making.
